As a big fan of Steve Chandler, this was a let-down

I am a huge fan of Steve Chandler and loved The Prosperous Coach, which he co-authored with Rich Litvin. In fact, I received a free copy of the book for review, as I have for his past books, and I am extremely grateful to his publisher. The Prosperous Coach was eye-opening, fresh and powerful, and it also covered useful insights and details and practical tips for the reader to take action on. I had hoped that this book was also well-thought-out and insightful.
Sadly, this book was a huge let-down. It was more a rehash of random ideas without much coherence in between the sections all put together in a hurry. In fact, it's a great title for a couple of long detailed blog posts but it's not enough material or context for a book. I know that the author loves to put out books and comes from a great place of passion and service, but this book isn't really covering any one strong premise.
Here were my main disappointments with the book:
- It is a rushed book, rushed "chapters" which are all 2-3 pages, and random ideas.
- A rehash of some of what is in The Prosperous Coach but in short unexplored bursts.
- Unclear. Sometimes, I have no idea what reference the author is making.
- The inspiration is more like a beat-you-in-the-head-until-you-get-it approach. It could be more powerful and more effective.
- The 17 lies section is more a "link bait" title than the actual lies that I could find much relevance to. Irrelevant and inapplicable in most parts.
I am giving it a 3-stars because Steve Chandler's ideas, along with the work I've been doing with my own business coach, have really revamped my career coaching practice. If it were the only book I had read by the author, I'd probably be tempted to give it a 2-stars.
I feel that there is SO MUCH more that the author could share in painting the full picture, rather than fragments of several different unfinished pictures. For instance, just the advice "just coach people" is in itself vague. How? What does it mean to give them 2 free hours and then another 2 free hours? And can we please talk about how to bring these conversations to a powerful close so we can convert them to clients? If that's what you want to know, you won't learn that in this book, but if you want to learn some of the do's and don'ts of coaching and how to get inspired to coach people, it's a good book.

Highly recommended for anyone building a business

I loved this book, and I’m not a professional coach. I was reading from the perspective of a business owner with products to sell. The insights and advice in 37 Ways apply to anyone who wants to increase the number of clients they serve. I took pages of notes because Steve Chandler’s message strikes at the heart of building strong relationships and getting past self-imposed limitations. He addresses the fears and lies that get in the way of business success.
I’m a big fan of Steve’s conversational tone and short, easily digested chapters. But don’t let the short chapters fool you – there’s profound wisdom on every page. The questions he presents have caused me to re-think the way I structure conversations with prospective and existing clients. Every time I’ve applied one of his 37 strategies, I have seen positive results during my interaction with another person and in the way I feel about myself afterwards. It’s a book I’ll refer to again and again over time.

Coaches: Stop What You Are Doing and Read This Now

In 37 Ways...Steve Chandler continues to show why he is so successful in helping other coaches to build successful client-focused practices that transform lives. 37 Ways is a wonderful collection of insights and truths that ANY coach can take and immediately apply to their practice. When I read a Steve Chandler book, I am inspired to tap into my own brilliance and to step into my work as a coach with purpose, skill and confidence. In 37 Ways, I am reminded that coaching only works when our clients make an adult commitment to it, and that building a coaching practice successfully requires that same commitment from me. Thanks Steve and Maurice!!
