About the Author
Kristin Johannsen held an MA in Applied English Linguistics from the University of Wisconsin - Madison. She had extensive experience teaching English in Japan, the United Arab Emirates, South Korea, France, and the United States. She has presented her ideas on global issues at multiple conferences around the world and was a published author. She spoke several languages including French, German, Spanish, Norwegian, and Korean.

Martin Milner holds a Masters of Education from the University of Wales, Cardiff. He has held teaching and advising posts in Mexico, Namibia, Zanzibar, and Scotland. His work for the British Council sent him to Hungary and Thailand to set up English programs as well as advise the teachers in the program. He currently lives in Mexico where he works as a writer and editor.

The author team (Hector Sanchez, Eric Tejeda, David Ramos, Isa Tirado, Norma Hernandez, and Arthur Frias) are the academic coordinators of the different programs offered by PROULEX, the University of Guadalajara Language Center. They are experienced in-house materials developers, testing materials writers, and syllabus designers. They all have close contact with the Comunidades Bilingues project, will be able to observe classes, interview instructors and pilot materials throughout the writing of the series.

Swift Programming Masterpiece

This book is really a masterpiece. Reminds me of other advanced books from years ago like Effective C++ and Effective Perl Programming. It contains such great explanations of the advanced features of the language and is strictly committed to an idiomatic Swift syntax--highlighting key differences between Swift and other languages that really set Swift apart. I have been doing Swift development from day one and haven't looked back--yet this book has filled in many gaps in my understanding that I didn't realize were there. When I read the chapter on optionals for example, I thought I would just breeze through it since I knew everything about them--or so I thought. I was wrong. Lots of really good insight in that chapter alone. And it just gets better from there.

I am giving the book 5 stars based on the content alone since it is so rich. I will, however, mention and this is more of a shame-on-you in the publishing realm--there are widows and orphans in the code snippets. A code block will begin with a single line at the end of one page (widow) and complete on the next page (forcing me to flip back and forth to get the gist of the snippet). Or the code block will almost all finish on one page and one line will appear on the next (orphan). I realize this is a nit and I can live with it, but I would get that fixed in the publishing for a future release as it would improve the experience.

Last point--and this is more of a general complaint about Kindle books. While it was nice that I was able to get the Kindle version for free here on Amazon after purchasing the print version, the code layout in Kindle is (still) abysmal. It's very challenging to read code coherently. I started reading the book on the Kindle since I was able to download it and start reading immediately, but I kept running into issues trying to read the code examples and just gave up--preferring to wait for the print version to arrive. Amazon really needs to figure out the disconnect between the correctly formatted content technical book writers provide and the Kindle output of code. It's my experience that most (if not all) Kindle formatted technical books are this way. It's a shame this hasn't been resolved. It's not like this is a new problem.

The book has some amazing content. But it makes for quite a hard ...

I'm a bit torn. The book has some amazing content. But it makes for quite a hard read as the difficulty level varies dramatically from page to page. I feel as if the authors got tired of explaining things at low levels at times and just said "screw it, we'll just hope they understand."

For example, the book early on explains what an array is. It shows you how to define an array with:
let fibs = [0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5]
and describes some properties such as first, last, etc. Extremely basic content like this. You get a bit bored at times going through the pedantry that surely shouldn't be mentioned in a book titled "Advanced Swift."

Then later on, the authors explicitly mention that the protocol chapter will include information about constraints, type erasure and associated types. Great. I don't know much about those concepts, but I'll be sure to learn them when we get there. But for some reason, he then decides he's just going to go ahead and structure his examples using these concepts anyways even though he hasn't taught them yet...

Furthermore, one section in the String chapter, the author decides "bitcast" is common knowledge to readers who weren't familiar with what an array was when they opened the book. Upon looking it up, I found that it is a term specific to LLVM. He then uses COpaquePointers, unsafeBitCast, an ~ operator, a

About the Author
Sylvia Rimm, Ph.D., is a best-selling author who was a contributing correspondent for nine years on NBC s Today Show and who hosts a nationally broadcast radio program Family Talk with Sylvia Rimm. Dr. Rimm is a psychologist who specializes in working with gifted children and is the director of the Family Achievement Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio. She also writes a syndicated newspaper column on parenting.

She has authored hundreds of articles and more than 20 books, including See Jane Win, which described her research on the childhoods of successful women. This book hit the New York Times Bestseller list and was also featured on the Oprah Winfrey and Today Shows, and in People magazine. Another book she wrote, Rescuing the Emotional Lives of Overweight Children, was a finalist for the Books for a Better Life Award. Katie Couric, former long-time host of NBC s Today Show, says, Dr. Rimm is a welcome voice of calm and reason someone who offers practical advice, with almost immediate results. She s a guardian angel for families who need a little or a lot of guidance.

Dr. Rimm has served on the Board of Directors of the National Association for Gifted Children, and is a frequent keynote speaker at conferences. A mother of four, and grandmother of nine, she lives in Cleveland with her husband.

Chapter 1: What Is Underachievement?

Our nation continually searches for better ways to educate its children. National and international studies routinely report depressing statistics about U.S. children's lack of basic skills, inadequate knowledge of science, below-average skills in mathematics, inept critical thinking, and poor problem-solving abilities, as well as their lack of readiness for post-high school education and the workforce. The U.S. Department of Education conducted a study, ending in 2001, which reported that only 53% of students who enter a four-year institution actually earn a bachelor's degree.

These problems have been blamed on such villains as television, movies, violent computer and video games, the economy, the breakdown of the family, large classes, the Internet, not enough class time, shortages of funds, and poor discipline. Education professionals complicate the discussion by use of such inside jargon as "cultural deprivation," "learning disabilities," "tracking," "test bias," "no child left behind," "Title One," and "inclusion." Children are diagnosed with disorders such as Learning Disability, Executive Dysfunction difficulties, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Asperger's Syndrome, Bipolar Disorder, Overanxious Disorder, and Depressive Reaction. The endless controversy can be bewildering to most parents who may not also be educators, as well as for educators who truly want to teach children.

All of these debates about why American children don't learn as well as they should ignore a very basic issue. Even if we add time to the school day, give new titles to federal funding, increase teacher salaries, reduce class size, fund education for children with special needs, and change tests to reflect differences in cultural environments and learning styles,we are still not facing a central problem in our schools.

Millions of children who have no actual diagnosable disorder that would affect learning--children with average, above-average, and even gifted intellectual abilities, including those from homes where education is valued--are simply not performing up to their capabilities. These children may be very creative or verbally or mathematically precocious, yet despite their abilities, they do not perform well in school. Social and emotional factors are the culprits, and psychological strategies must be used to prevent and reverse their underachievement.

Underachievers sit in virtually every classroom and live in many families. They waste educational resources, try the patience of even the best teachers, manipulate their families toward chaos, and destroy their own confidence and sense of personal control.

The problem is disconcertingly widespread. When I appeared for a five-minute interview on NBC's Today show covering the topic of bright, underachieving children, that one segment attracted more than 20,000 phone calls and thousands of letters from distressed parents from all over the country (see Figure 1.1). It seems that I had hit a raw nerve for tens of thousands of families who recognized the symptoms of Underachievement Syndrome in their children...

Good general information about underachievers

I was looking for a book to help me get my 15 year old underachieving son back on track in school. I needed specifics and information that would be relevant to a teenager. This book had a lot of information about underachievers and about homework struggles in general, but it is geared towards elementary and middle school students. Reward systems and check-in lists for teachers were big suggestions and they will not work for high schoolers. The advice about parenting the different kinds of underachievers was helpful, though. We have been fairly indulgent and will definitely promote more independence in our son from here on out. I disagreed with the cross-gender identification advice, though. I think most families have one parent that will have more insight and patience for supervising homework and it isn't necessarily (or even usually) the father, for the sons or daughters. Also, as a pediatrician, I was dismayed to read outdated ideas and advice about ADHD. The ability of a very active ("hyperactive") child to sit and play video games does NOT mean that the child can pay attention when asked to perform less interesting or engaging tasks, such as schoolwork. Overall, though, it provided a lot of general information about underachieving children, just not enough specifics for teenagers.

This is a book parents and educators alike would benefit from reading. From the title I thought it only applied to gifted students who are not movitated to learn to their full potential but it applies to all students. The author identifies traits all of us have that impacts how we learn and recommends strategies to improve learning. Excellent, though-provoking, and an easy read!

A great variety

My daughter uses this book for extra math practice. As you work your way through, the problems progressively become more difficult. I love how each day has a mixture of different types of math problems; some are simple and some are more complex. It keeps my daughter from becoming easily bored and/or frustrated.

Excellent book to start learning FEA, BUT...

This book starts FEA from the very scratch. It is good for an undergraduate course and can be used as a quick review for graduate level. The chapters are very well organized. Every single procedures are illustrated clearly followed by good examples. There are several software package including ANSYS and MATLAB at the end of the book with explanation on how to do some of the chapter exercises and projects. The book level goes as far as to teach you how to optimize a design like a torque arm structure using FAE (that's what you see on the cover page). As a student who have read each single pages and lines of this book and did the exercises, I have found several typos which could be misleading if I was not familiar with concepts. All in all, the contents are good, BUT, BUT, BUT it is very expensive for what you get (around 90$) AND it is VERY HARD to use. They have printed this 420 pages book on very thin papers (like onion skin) which makes it extremely hard to use. There is also no index at the end. Thanks to the authors for the good job.

Great introductory text for FEA

This is a great text for an introductory course for FEA. There seemed to be a few numerical errors or typos in some of the examples, but other than that I have no real complaints about the book. Used it for an FEA course this semester and it was straight forward to follow along with.

This is an excellently written textbook. I took a finite element course that the author Dr. Kim taught and he used this textbook. I enjoyed how the book used examples to illustrate the concepts in each chapter.
