HAL KOERNER has raced ultramarathons across the globe and set fastest known time records on the Colorado Trail and the John Muir Trail. He was featured in the 2011 film Unbreakable: The Western States 100 and in 2014 was called "The Happiest Runner on Earth" by Outside magazine.

About the Author

Hal Koerner is one of America's top ultrarunners. He has won Hardrock and twice won the Western States 100. He has finished on the podium in over 90 ultramarathons, setting fastest known times on the Colorado Trail and the John Muir Trail. Hal is race director of four popular trail runs in Oregon and owns Rogue Valley Runners, a running store that is a Mecca for trail runners in the Pacific Northwest.

this book will disappoint. At no point does it wax poetic about ...

Competently written with the assistance of Adam Chase, the guide is well organized from preparation to gear, from training to racing. For those looking for an exciting read into the world of trail ultras, this book will disappoint. At no point does it wax poetic about the trails. Instead, Koerner focused on getting you there, and safely, so you can do the poetic bit yourself. Also, the less romantic bits like eating on the run, handling mud, and where to pee.

One thing that might be misleading to some - this guide is exclusively oriented to trail unltrarunning. Wait, that's not right. It's exclusively oriented to trail racing.

It does not include any ultra road races or 12/24/48 hour events and the unique challenges they pose. If you are intending to try one of those events, you'll need to seek some advice outside the scope of the Field Guide to Ultrarunning.

The book is geared towards ultra-racing more than simply ultrarunning but the principles remain. The cool part about ultrarunning is you really don't need permission or a race entry to go someplace awesome to run. If you've built out the body to handle it and learned how to handle the trails, you have all you need to do an ultra-run, even if you never do an ultra-race.

One pleasant element of the book was Koerner's willingness to use his mistakes as object lessons for the rest of us to learn from. I've maintained that the guy or woman who wins the race isn't always the best runner but the one who makes the least mistakes.

Using the real life examples, Koerner does a nice job of showing the results of bad decision-making and, sometimes, just plain bad luck. He offers good advice on how to handle it. When you get to that part of the book, listen. It may save your ultrarunning career.

If you're a marathoner looking to move up, this is a book that should land on your book shelf and be referred to frequently. If you never conceive of doing anything so foolish as an ultra, it's probably not for you.

If you're on the fence, though, get the book. Hal Koerner will lead you through the process, show you it's achievable, and put the tools in your hand to get there.

Once you have the tools, it's up to you to go out and find the poetry on the trail.

I would have liked him to go deeper

This book is an insight into Hal Koerner's approach to ultrarunning. In that sense, it is aptly titled. You'll read about Hal's thoughts, practices, challenges, and even his playlists. It is not so much a guide for ultrarunning in general but for *Hal's way* of ultrarunning. That said, let us not forget that Hal Koerner is one of the most successful ultrarunners of his generation. Hal's way works, clearly. And, by all accounts, he is a true sportsman and gentleman. And so I found myself reading as much to learn things about ultrarunning as I did to learn about Hal and what makes him tick as a runner. In that sense, I would have liked him to go deeper, both into his own motivations, challenges, how he creates meaning beyond competition, etc. (though, to be fair, that may be better suited for a autobiography sort of thing), as well as going deeper into the how & why his training plans are what they are, i.e. what science or experience are behind them.

But, while I am an experienced road marathon runner, I am new to ultrarunning. For my needs, I found Byron's book to be of better assistance. But I am a fan of Hal, and I did learn a few things from this book. I enjoyed it.

It is worth a read so long as you know what you are reading. If you want a definitive intro to the sport, this may not be the best option. But if you know/admire/respect Hal Koerner's accomplishments as a runner and want to learn from his method, this is your read.

As a lifelong runner who has gradually upped my mileage over the last few years and will run my first ultramarathon in a month I am excited to have this field guide. The style of writing is engaging, and the content is exactly what I need to help me prepare mentally and physically. The real-world tips are invaluable!

About the Author
Richard Magill is a professor in both the Department of Kinesiology and the Department of Psychology at Louisiana State University. He received his Ph.D. in educational psychology from Florida State University with a specialization in motor learning. Earlier he received an M.Ed. from Temple University and a B.S. from Philedelphia College of Bible. He served as the Editor-in-Chief of the Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport from 1996-1999 having previously served as the section editor for motor learning. He also serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Motor Behavior and has provided editorial assistance to numreous other motor learning journals around the world. Dr, Magill is widley published in refereed journals and has active in the service of Louisiana State University and numerous professional organizations. In April 1999 he was given the LSU Distinguished Faculty Award and in September he was the recipient of the endowed professorship, Helen “Bessie” Silverberg Pliner Professor in Kinesiology.

I hate the loose-leaf version though

The textbook has the information that you need. I hate the loose-leaf version though. Somehow it frequently falls out of my binder (probably because it's cheap), and the holes have been torn so that I just have to set the pages in and hope they're still there later.

Jeremy Rifkin is president of the Foundation on Economic Trends and the author of eighteen bestselling books, including The Hydrogen Economy and The End of Work. “Our industrial civilization is at a crossroads. Oil and the other fossil fuel energies that make up the industrial way of life are sunsetting, and the technologies made from and propelled by these energies are antiquated,” explains Author Jeremy Rifkin. He is a lecturer at Wharton business school, on new trends in science, technology, the economy, and society, but more impressively is a consultant to the EU on these issues, and also to the Chinese government.
This book is a description of the convergence of new communication technologies with new energy systems to create the Third Industrial Revolution. The first two industrial revolutions profoundly changed history, but came with a huge social and environmental costs.
First and Second Industrial Revolutions forged the course of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. These revolutions were based on fossil fuels—coal, oil, and natural gas, which are only found in specific places. As such, these places require geopolitical management, and often significant military investment to secure access to them. This necessitated a centralized energy infrastructure which set the tone for the rest of the economy and social life for two centuries.
First Industrial Revolution had as its centrepiece coal-powered, steam-driven machines. The railroad, was one of its most important achievements, with profound consequences. Building a railroad required more capital than even the wealthiest families of the day could afford singlehandedly. This led to the need to concentrate the capital of investors which resulted in the separation of ownership from the management of the business.
The challenges of running a railroad were unique. Hundreds of miles of track had to be laid, rail beds had to be maintained, engines and carriages repaired, systems developed to prevent accidents and extensive up-to-the-moment records. This required layers of management and a gargantuan workforce with output optimized through top-down command and control, and tasks broken down into fixed, repeatable stages.
The railroads led to other necessary businesses like the telegraph industry which also had to be huge. Other mass-producing giants appeared with centralized factories to reduce the cost of production. For example, small farms gave way to agri-businesses that transformed food production into a factory system.
An army of people were needed who could write reports and write critical management documents. The school system was organized along the same lines as businesses with top-down management, fixed tasks and outcomes, to best prepare a literate workforce for life in large, centralized, authoritarian businesses.
“The centralized and rationalized business model established during the First Industrial Revolution, carried over to the Second Industrial Revolution (the Oil Age.)” Rifkin explains. The character of the oil industry has been gigantism and centralization, because it too required large amounts of capital, economies of scale, and a top-down command and control structure. The Oil Age required the most expensive organization ever conceived to collect, process, and distribute its energy.
Gigantism and centralization affected other industries too: modern finance, automotive, power and utilities, telecommunications, and commercial construction.
“In the coming half century, the conventional, centralized business operations of the First and Second Industrial Revolutions will increasingly be subsumed by the distributed business practices of the Third Industrial Revolution.” This is the core message of this book.
“We have the science, the technology, and the game plan to make it happen,” says Rifkin and working at the highest levels of the world’s largest economies, he is in a position to know.
Hundreds of millions of human beings can now generate their own green energy in their homes, offices, and factories. They can share it with others across intelligent, distributed, electricity networks—‘an intergrid’—just as they do with the information they create and share on the Internet.
Here are some facts Rifkin presents: the cost of photovoltaic electricity is expected to decline at a rate of 8% a year, halving the cost of generation every eight years. The commercial growth in solar and wind technology is as dramatic as the growth in personal computers and Internet use, with installations doubling every two years.
One hour of sunlight provides enough power to run a global economy for a full year. 40% of the roofs, and 15% of all the building facades in the EU, are suitable for photovoltaic applications.
The United States has enough wind resources to power the entire nation several times over. A Stanford University study of global wind capacity estimates that harnessing 20% of the available wind on the planet, would provide seven times more electricity than the world now uses.
Hydropower currently makes up the largest portion of green-generated electricity in the world, but the untapped potential, is in small distributed hydropower installations.
The geothermal energy beneath the Earth’s surface reaches 4,000 degrees Celsius, and that energy is continuously flowing to the surface. In the United States, the geothermal energy within two miles of the Earth’s surface produces enough energy to provide for America’s needs for 30,000 years.
Biomass includes fuel crops, forestry waste, and municipal garbage. The World Bioenergy Association claims that “the world’s bioenergy potential is large enough to meet the global energy demand in 2050.”
Conventional energy (coal, oil, gas, and uranium) employed 260,000 in Germany in 2003, whereas renewable energy by 2007 accounted for 249,300 jobs. Put differently, less than 10% of the energy produced by renewable sources, created nearly as many jobs as all other energy sources combined.
The Spanish economy, which supports over 188,000 renewable energy jobs and 1,027 renewable energy companies, has produced five times the employment of the conventional energy industry.
We have the ability to change from a carbon-based fossil fuel energy regime to a renewable energy regime. We can reconfigure the buildings of the world, and transform every house into a mini power plant that can collect renewable energies on site. We are able to store the renewable energy so that we can ensure a continuous, reliable supply of green electricity to meet demand. Using Internet communication technology we can convert the electricity grid into an intelligent utility network. Millions of people will be able to send the green electricity they generate on their buildings to the grid to share with others just as information is generated and shared on the Internet.
We are seeing the movement of cars, buses, trucks, trains to electric plug-in and fuel cell vehicles powered by renewable energies. We are seeing charging stations across countries where people can buy and sell electricity on the distributed electricity grid.
The emerging Third Industrial Revolution, is a function of distributed renewable energies, that will be collected at millions of local sites and then aggregated and shared with others. These renewable energies are found everywhere and are partially free—sun, wind, hydro, geothermal heat, biomass, and ocean waves and tides. We are now able to achieve optimum energy levels and at the same time maintain a high-performing, sustainable economy.
These are exciting times and they have already begun.

Afraid the end of the world is nigh? Here's a hopeful message, and it's brilliant

More than half the children born today in the United States or Europe will live to see the 22nd Century. In theory.

However, if you're unreservedly optimistic about the future of today's young children, chances are you haven't been paying attention. In the face of global warming, overpopulation, resource limits, and the growing number of species going extinct, it's difficult to look far ahead without wondering whether the human race can truly meet the existential challenges we face.

Jeremy Rifkin thinks we can. He is both a realist, and, if at least one of his many books can be believed, an optimist. In The Third Industrial Revolution, he lays out a comprehensive platform on which the human race can build a sustainable future. His vision of the future is nothing less than brilliant.

To be sure, Rifkin isn't predicting that his vision will take hold. He's hoping it will. The Third Industrial Revolution is, above all, hopeful.

Rifkin's vision is complex and wide-ranging. Within the 300 pages of The Third Industrial Revolution, he delves into energy, communications, transportation, history, economics, thermodynamics, paleontology, philosophy, psychology, education, and numerous other subjects. It's a dazzling display of erudition.

The author notes that the Second Industrial Revolution from which we're now emerging was dominated by the telephone, the automobile, and fossil fuels. That's hard to dispute. The Third Industrial Revolution is being built on the foundation of the Internet and renewable energy, leading humanity forward into a post-carbon era - and that's the part that requires the reader to "suspend disbelief," as the writers of science fiction ask us to do.

In this new era, Rifkin writes, "the conventional, centralized business operations of the First and Second Industrial Revolutions will increasingly be subsumed by the distributed business practices of the Third Industrial Revolution; and the traditional, hierarchical organization of economic and political power will give way to lateral power organized nodally across society." For example, in place of most large electric generating facilities, every building will generate its own energy. Any surplus will be sold to others through trading networks managed by the successors to today's electric utilities. Rifkin estimates that the process of building out this Third Industrial Revolution will take 40-50 years, roughly the same amount of time that previous economic upheavals required. This assumes, of course, that global warming and other threatening trends will allow us that much time. Rifkin believes they will, and I'm hoping he's right.

"As we approach the middle of the century," he writes, "more and more commerce will be overseen by intelligent technological surrogates, freeing up much of the human race to create social capital in the not-for-profit civil society, making it the dominant sector in the second half of the century." This assertion derives from an earlier book Rifkin wrote, The End of Work.

It's easy to dismiss this vision as utopian and unattainable, as all utopian visions are. However, Jeremy Rifkin is no idle dreamer. As he explains at great length in The Third Industrial Revolution, this vision has been bought whole by the European Union, the Utrecht region of the Netherlands, and the cities of Rome and San Antonio, among many others. Rifkin, his staff, and a growing number of highly placed collaborators in both industry and government offices have been at work since the publication of the book in 2011 helping to develop custom-tailored regional plans consistent with this vision. Rifkin's successful ongoing engagement with the European Union is especially impressive - and, he reminds us, "the European Union, not the United States or China, is the biggest economy in the world."

European officialdom, specifically including such luminaries as Angela Merkel, are now in the process of shifting their economies to incorporate what the author calls "the five pillars" of the Third Industrial Revolution:

(1) shifting to renewable energy;

(2) transforming the building stock of every continent into micro-power plants to collect renewable energies on site;

(3) deploying hydrogen and other storage technologies in every building and throughout the infrastructure to store intermittent energies;

(4) using Internet technology to transform the power grid of every continent into an energy-sharing intergrid that acts just like the Internet . . .; and

(5) transitioning the transport fleet to electric plug-in and fuel cell vehicles that can buy and sell electricity on a smart, continental, interactive power grid.

This economic transformation will bring profound changes to our lives and our surroundings. "Vertical economies of scale became the defining feature of the incipient industrial age and gigantic business operations became the norm . . . The distributed nature of renewable energies necessitates collaborative rather than hierarchical command and control mechanisms." And all this change is consistent with the new pedagogy beginning to take hold in many schools around the globe, which emphasizes collaboration rather than competition, problem solving rather than rote learning, and what Rifkin calls "biosphere thinking," which places humanity within the context of the web of life on Earth. (Perhaps you've even noticed that people under the age of 18 tend not to think the way we older adults do?)

"If it is difficult to imagine a change of this kind, think of how preposterous it must have been to a feudal lord, his knights in arms, and his indentured serfs to conjure the possibility of free wage earners selling their labor power in national markets, each a sovereign in his own right in the political sphere, all bound together by a set of agreed-upon rights and freedoms and a sense of national loyalty."

The best model I've found by which to understand deep rooted social and environmental problems and become an agent of change.

This was a second book I bought, this one to share with friends and family. It is the first book I have read on the worlds "economic" crisis which provided a model as to the primary causes. It also offers solutions that can help direct the necessary changes to take place. Most importantly he provides an historical model of this type of industrial change. Rifkin speaks of the coming of a reduction in size of government structures. I find this model especially helpful. The transitions, as he points out, take many years, decades, in fact. And there is a lot of pain, often cause by those opposing the changes. Most of us can bear hard transitions if we see some good in the outcome. Jeremy Rifkin's proposition is that the transitioning to "Lateral (distributed) Power" is the change that provides an empowering, upbeat and to be hoped for outcome.
This is not an easy read, but for those emotionally mature enough to have their notions challenged it is well worth the read. Ponder his premise, and think fresh and open thoughts on the Why of economic and social change. I found it freeing.

Louis Swaim lives and practices in Oakland, California. He has also translated an earlier taijiquan manual, Yang Chengfu: The Essence and Applications of Taijiquan (North Atlantic Books, 2005). He received his master’s degree in Chinese history, Mandarin, and Classical Chinese at U.C. Berkeley, and did additional language study at the Inter-University Program for Chinese Language Studies. He has been a taijiquan practitioner for over thirty years.

A Treasure !!!

This is the only book writing whose review, I feel humbled; because it is not just written by someone who is a good Teacher, or one who KNOWS a lot about Tai Chi Chuan but a Tai Chi MASTER.
Important Points:
1. One must understand Yang Cheng Fu's and Fu Zhongwen's approach to learning Tai Chi, which is different from our conventional approach. Their emphasis has been to discover and understand the principles through the movement. So doing the movements correctly is of primary importance, because only then one will be able to master the secrets of Tai Chi. So Don't go looking for tonnes of Theory since this book is from a legendary master. It is completely practical, giving you the guidelines as to how to do Tai Chi Chuan practice thereby providing you the necessary tool to discover all the theory by yourself instead of just believing what the master says.
2. I don't like to write praises about this book because it is well beyond words. Don't believe me, do the practices as told, keeping the internal aspects in focus as well (like, an insubstantial energy in the head, the qi sinking to the Dantian, use intent rather than strength, etc.) and you will for and by yourself know what this book is worth.
3. Many Tai Chi books focus on the theory and explain so well that we "agree" and say "yes" to all of it without making it a part of our lives. Those theories operate in our lives only as long as we keep thinking about them. In this respect, I find the approach of this book different - it focuses on the practice and on doing the practice you get to understand something - not necessarily a theory - and that understanding expresses itself by itself, with or without your thinking of it.
4. Fu Zhongwen was one rare treasure of China and of the Tai Chi world. His understanding is evident not in the words he speaks but in his actions. He had accepted challenges on behalf of Yang Cheng Fu during their trip to southern China, fighting martial artists from different form of martial arts all fighting for their honour - and Fu Zhongwen was never defeated. This shows his understanding of Tai Chi. Why do I mention this? Many people say they know Tai Chi and are unable to fight, but Tai Chi brings about a unification of Jing, Qi and Shen. If so, then you can easily express it in a martial way. If you cannot, then it shows that your jing, qi and shen are not unified - i.e., your Tai chi doesn't have Kung Fu, or it is no Good.
Please keep the above points in mind before purchasing this book.
I would once again pay respects to the great master Fu Zhongwen for his great gift to me.
Ps: I am no disciple or student of Fu Zhongwen or his son Fu Shengyuan, nor am I in any way related to his Tai Chi institutions. I respect him for what I have read of him on the internet and the depth of his words in this book.

The ultimate tai chi book

This books is really a worth to buy. It's much more deeper than any other Tai Chi book I've ever read. I've never find so deep descriptions of the movement covering any aspect of the movement itself. For a beginner a so big amount of information could make confusion but anyway this is the book where you will find tips and knowledge every time you read it again.

Very detailed and useful for study

Swaim�s translation of Fu�s incredibly detailed description of Yang Style Tai Chi is both clear and interesting. The text itself covers details of the form, descriptions of push hands, and discussions of the Tai Chi classics and theory. Fu�s text contains much more detail than most of the classic texts, and he goes to great lengths to explain his points. Anyone who practices Tai Chi will find some point in the text which would help their practice. My only complaint is that the historical line-drawings which illustrate the moves are limited in the detail they can convey.

Got this book over the holidays. This book is fantastically written keeping Applications in mind. Exadata has so many components, even the best of DBAs at times, find Exadata bit tricky. The author has done a great job - very succinctly written.

This book covers many topics related to running Applications on Exadata which are not covered anywhere, for example: the chapter leveraging Exadata features contains so many useful tips which are not documented anywhere. Sizing Exadata always used to be a secret, the author does full justice in explaining sizing in a lucid manner.

This book covers everything from Exadata basics to advanced topics like Consolidation, Resource Management, Monitoring, Administering, Backups and so on. The author has dedicated one section with sample commands for CellCLI which is really helpful.

This book is very well researched and well presented. I am very impressed the way this book is written, very much focused, to the point, covering everything about Exadata in an incredibly easy to read fashion.
This book is written keeping Applications in mind, It is a must for anyone who is planning to Implement Applications on Exadata. It has so many awesome tips and techniques of running Apps on Exadata which is not mentioned anywhere else.
The best part is this book is not at all bulky unlike other books which make reading scary. Those who are new to Exadata will find this book Extremely useful. It covers everything on Exadata.

His whole life has been mapped out for him, but Jarlath yearns for an indefinable more which he finds in the beautiful and sexy but unsuitable Keira Cloud …now all he has to do is survive in this spellbinding paranormal romance.

Jarlath aches to claim Keira but the pressures of being the heir are standing in his way also he’s a cat shifter and she’s a crow shifter ….entirely unsuitable right? These strong captivating characters capture the heart and seduce readers into their story and they defy everyone as their attraction grows hotter and hotter until they give into their scorching desires with some hot and steamy sex scenes. The fast paced and smooth flowing plot builds anticipation throughout with lots of suspense, excitement and passion while the emotional turmoil of the relationship as well as the fallout from the battles taking place adds lots of depth to the story.

There is never a dull moment as an enemy suddenly surfaces and lays siege to the palace and surrounding towns adding lots of danger and excitement with mysterious magical battles and that’s just the tip of the ice berg, there’s the internal conflicts and pressures heaped upon a Jarlath’s head and someone from Keria’s past wants her for his very own. The well written scenes and details paint vivid images that capture the imagination and make it easy for the reader to picture each and every scene and the well orchestrated suspense draws the reader in ensuring that they can’t put the story down until they have read every last word.

The story has an old world historical feel but at the same time has a futuristic feel that makes an awesome setting for the characters and the intriguing plot. I was completely enthralled with Jarlath and Keira’s story from the very beginning and I can’t wait to read the next one.

Love A Great Story!

At first I thought Jarlath was going to be one of those "Feel sorry for me, I'm so privileged but have to pick a wife that I don't love...type of guys" And while his parents are pushing him to pick one of the suitable women they have picked out for him to choose from, he soon finds himself with other plans.

Keira is a widow and not at all suitable marriage material for Prince Jarlath, especially since so many people think she killed her now deceased husband. But that doesn't stop Jarlath from spending time with her. Keira has some secrets she'd rather keep to herself but it's getting harder and harder for her to keep them secret especially since her family is his families enemy.

I really didn't care for Jarlath's mother at all. I really wanted her to change her attitude so I could come to like her more but there's almost always one character that will get under a reader's skin and she was that character for me. Her attitude rubbed me the wrong way. You ever want to just reach through a book a slap a character? Yeah, totally that.

I have to say that each and every sex scene or scene where Jarlath and Keira were intimate, even a little bit was so hot that it could have melted the jewels right out of the Queen's tiara. But that's not a bad thing at all, sexy time is good.

I love paranormal romance and for me if you add a little something more like people from another planet *which is what this is* then you get even more because the laws, terrain, worlds...everything is different from what you expect to find here on Earth. Reading a book and not knowing what might happen because it's not Earth is exciting. Alien races can do things that we aren't used to, not to mention that this book has shifters in it, big cats as well as crows.

I'm really hoping that Ellard who is Jarlath's best friend and a great secondary character, gets his own story. He went through a lot in this book and I'd really like to see more of him.

I've read several of Shelley Munro's books and one of the things I really like about her stories besides the great plots are the unique character names. There are some names that are so unique that I've never read them anywhere else and doubt I will. I really like that about her books.

PNR meets Sci-Fi!

I received this book for an honest review.
Prince Jarlath is the "good son" the one who always did what he was told and listened to his parents in the name of duty. Heir to the House of the Cat he starts to question how he's lived his life when forced with the duty of picking what his parents deem a suitable life. These questions become even stronger after he meets the beautiful, feisty, widow Keira Cloud who not only isn't suitable due to station and reputation but also comes from the House of Cawdor who is his own house's enemy. In his quest to see Keira more and more he finds his eyes being opened to the true state of his planet and the day to day woes his people are facing. Refusing to keep his head buried in the stand he is determined to be the leader his people need but does this mean giving up the love of his life? Can he have both?
I read a good amount of PNR books but don't normally dip into the sci-fi world, that being said I started reading this book with an open mind excited to visit the world the author had created. I enjoyed getting to know Keira and Jarlath and hope that since this is a series this isn't the last we see of them. The story was well written with conflict, passion, and even some humor thrown in. My only "complaint" is that I felt the ending rushed a bit there was all this build up to this huge conflict and it kind of came to a neat conclusion rather quickly. It also left me with a few minor unanswered questions but I'm hoping since the series continues i'll get my answers further down the road. This is a standalone story though as being part of a series I always find it beneficial to read the books in order as though each book stands on it's own two feet you see carryover from one to the next. I look forward to reading more in this series!
