Thorough Analysis of an Increasing Shift in Global Habitats

This book is an excellent resource for anyone interested in the topic of urban ecosystems. While the authors are English, they do an unbiased job of including case studies from all over the world and describe a thorough span of different urban ecosystems and their inhabitants. My favorite part of this text was the inclusion of social implications (how social structures like socioeconomic status have impacted how species are redistributed or allowed to thrive in certain urban environments). I originally bought this book for a college course, but it has a place in my permanent collection for sure!

A great overview of relevant topics and vocabulary. Some chapters (such as chapter 4) are a little weak but I think it is due to uncertainty in where one topic ends and another begins - much of what I thought would be in chapter 4 was in chapter 5 so the detail was eventually covered.

Way too much, unless you are a expert

Wow, what a book about preaching. The book is long, detailed, and yes tedious. I was warned before hand concerning the book, thanks Matt, of the nature of the discussion. Buttrick is a master, there is no doubt. He knows every thing and every one concerning preaching. This book is not for the average preacher, most would have no clue what he is talking about, it is mostly theory. This book is beyond me, I am not that good yet to practice this methodology. But the book was helpful in polishing the pulpit. The book is like fine sandpaper, it puts on a beautiful finish on a preacher, but you have to be polished before the paper would do the job. If you are a top notch preacher that needs the most challenging material and style, this book is for you. If not, read "Preaching" by Calvin Miller this year.

Preaching Paralysis by Analysis

I remember asking Fred Craddock about Buttrick's book at a conference. He looked at me with a grin and said, "I told David that the book was way too long and that he had no real research to back up the claims." As a preacher and a homiletics nerd it is fun to geek out with a book like this. I remember reading it as a young minister starting out and thinking I had found the Holy Grail of preaching. Buttrick seems to convey that he has cracked some homiletical code for preaching compelling sermons. After reading the book and preaching for 20 years in the local church I can tell you that this book is simply one preaching professor's attempt at a science experiment that doesn't prove anything. If preachers really tried to prepare sermons based on his "formula" they would drive themselves mad. More importantly, it would be a waste of time because, as Craddock noted, there is no proof that his theories are true or effective. In fact, I once watched a video of Buttrick preaching and was less than impressed. Granted, it was one sermon but if he was applying his theories in that sermon the proof was not in the pudding. Most listeners in churches would be bored stiff. I gave the book three stars because Buttrick put a great deal of effort into the book and it does contain some useful ideas about preaching. Let me save you some money and tell you the premise of the book which can be useful: Always consider the listener's perspective when preaching and vary your movements of thoughts so listeners don't get bored.

Best preaching book I have ever read

This is hands down the best preaching book I've ever read. I was so moved by the book that I considered getting a masters in theology at Vanderbuilt. This is coming from someone whose read over 100 plus books on preaching and oral communication. I consider it the preaching bible. My copy is marked up, highlighted and the pages are being held together with tape due to the many rereads and repeated references to various sections of the text.

The book is long, detailed and encyclopedic. However,the pain you endure while reading and attempting to incorporate the concepts into your sermons will result in pleasure for all those who hear your much improved sermons. I noticed an immediate improvement in my sermons after incorporating the concepts.

My only warning, this book is probably not for the first time preacher. If you have to give a talk for the first time and you need some advice, this is not the book for you. If however, you are someone with a basic understanding of how to put a sermon together, and have traveled the journey from sermon idea to delivery a few times, and want to take your preaching to next level, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK.

About the Author
Currently, Ken Evans is the lead Machine Tool Technology instructor at the Davis Applied Technology College in Kaysville, Utah. He has been employed there as full-time faculty for more than fifteen years. He teaches foundational through advanced machining curriculum including Mastercam CAD/CAM classes for regular students, other educators and private industry. He is certified to teach the Project Lead the Way course, Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM). Ken was the Training and Applications Specialist for a local machine tool distributor in Salt Lake City for 6 years where he taught Mazatrol Conversational programming classes for their customers. He was one of the nations first Mazatrol Programming instructors to work with a distributor and is certified by MAZAK. In addition, Ken trains other educators, from around the region how to set-up, program and operate their CNC Machines.

Very basic, not thorough, and with arbitrary chapters.

It starts off with CNC basics, approaching a reader who may have never even seen a CNC mill or lathe. This chapter covers many things involved with entire process but often never addresses them with any valuable insight. Instead, it redirects you to "The Machinery's Handbook" for many otherwise interesting and insightful segments.

It then presents a chapter on the control panel and it's functions. Again, very brief on many of the features and it describes a control panel I have personally never seen so to find invaluable. It has many of the common features of a regular panel but arranged in a manner I have yet to see in my line of work as a CNC machinist. For this particular knowledge I would recommend Peter Smid's CNC control set-up which contains hundreds of pages dedicated solely to the function of the panel.

The next chapter is on lathes. As I am a mill machinist, i have not read or am able to comment on it's quality in any manner.

Naturally, milling is the next chapter and here I am disappointed with the quality of information here. Peculiarly, it often uses g92 as it's work coordinate setting in its programs. This is not what a machinist will usually see in the trade and is a bad way to approach the subject of work offsets. G54 is what is most common and should have been addressed before G92. For a good portion of the G-code explanations, there is decent knowledge being put in the readers head, but as a machinist I find them to be only the bare bones examples with few concrete examples to really push some concepts into the readers head. It lacks a lot of real world familiarity within the examples and comes off as almost entirely theoretical at times. Cutter compensation is given only 2 pages of text where it could stand to use almost an entire chapter on its own due to the widespread use of cutter-comp in machine shops. The diagrams it displays often do not have text complimenting what the pictures are attempting to show. It's as if the book wanted to be much longer but what was cut short to save pages. There is a very obvious an unfortunate reason for this as well and it becomes clear in the subsequent chapters.

What follows is what I consider arbitrary chapters on CAM systems and Mazatrol panels. These are subjects deserving nothing more than a reference in a book that attempts to focus on manual programming of machines. Instead, it consumes 90 pages (or almost 25% o the entire text) of the book. It attempts to show you within these 90 pages how to program parts by utilizing CAM softwares and Mazatrol (a programming approach that does not use necessarily use G-codes, a different language in essence). In no way is this possible by dedicating less than 45 pages to each. These subjects are deserving of their own books entirely and if the author is as educated as the book claims him to be, then that is what should have been done. Instead, this book attempts to be an encyclopedia on CNC machining knowledge in some sort of way and falls hard and short of that attempt.

My motivation of purchase was to read the section on the Mazatrol programming language and unfortunately even after reading it in its entirety, I feel almost no more educated about the subject than I was when I first picked it up.

The two stars in this review are merited based on a quantitative review of the content rather than a qualitative analysis. In short, if you want a poor quality basket of CNC knowledge and have limited to no prior knowledge then this can be a good yet begrudging read. Otherwise this book serves no purpose being reprinted a fourth time if not to correct its shortcomings it presents in the third.

I was new to this feild, i picked up this book and had no problem getting very familiar with the way these machines finction. If you work at a shop and want to know more or are in school get this book! You wont be writhing code right off thw bat. But you can look at code a nd desipher it.

strong west wind was blowing and whitecapped waves slammed the shores as I traversed the lake looking for the home I was to photograph. Deer were everywhere. The tall cottonwood trees were in full fall color and layers of dark clouds covered the tops of the local mountains. After an hour of dirt roads I saw a very small sign at the foot of a bootjack fence. I assumed I was at the right place. Fortunately the gate was open and I entered a complex that I hoped would be as spectacular as it had been described. The golden grass and huge trees seemed to welcome me as I made my way along a dirt road. In time several buildings came into view. First a rustic garage, then a few smaller cabins and then a main house.

Great book on log cabins and homes

This is another great book by Ralph. A pleasant read with many quality photo's. Folks looking to build or decorate a log home will be well served with this book with its great ideas and inspirations.

Creative way to tell the meaning of Christmas

A farm family grows Christmas trees to sell, and the farmer's wife chooses the most beautiful tree for her own family, putting a sign on it, "Not for Sale". But when a poor family comes to the tree lot to see if they can pick out a tree from the free area (trees that have missing branches or crooked trunks), the poor family's little girl sees the beautiful tree and asks if she can choose that one. Everyone is embarrased that she asks, as the adults all know her family can't afford the tree. The farmer's wife responds that she is sorry, the tree isn't for sale...because they'd like the girl's family to have it as a gift. The book ends, "Yes, it was a great sacrifice. But it brought even greater joy. Isn't that just like Christmas?" The illustrations are very kid-friendly and fun. Applicable Bible verses are at the bottom of every other page. A creative and wonderful story.

Thanks for writing the book!

This book along with Elaine Gottschall's book has been extremely helpful to me in trying to figure out what foods are causing me problems. I started a low carb diet when I found out I have mild diabetes. After being on that diet for a little while I began to notice starchy foods seemed to cause me problems other than with blood sugar, even in small amounts. So, I did a lot of reading on the Internet and found books such as this one about starches causing health issues. I looked at some Internet sites such as coolinginflammation.com that discuss the link between diet and inflammation and many different health problems. My most painful problem is depression. I have had major depression three times, the last bout lasting a year before I began to get better. After that last one I have tended to get depressed moods very easily. Depression is no picnic. In fact it's pure Hell. So, I have been experimenting with diet to see if I could become more resilient. I think it's working. I was having insomnia all the time before the low carb diet. That has improved considerably due both to low carb and practically no starch. I believe that the starches somehow mess with my mood. Maybe it's inflammation. I don't know. The third group of foods which list many cooked vegetables, has been very helpful to me in figuring out what might be bothering me. In some ways the cooked vegetables seem to be worse for me than the grains. At a time when I was feeling let down by doctors, it was a life saver to have something to give me hope that I could improve. Another book which is interesting and helpful along this line is "Life Without Bread" by Allan,PHD. and Lutz M.D. This explains how too much carbohydrate in the diet can cause many health problems, and restricting carbs can bring definite improvement. Anyway, I am glad I found "The IBS Low-Starch Diet" book.
Update: I am no longer doing a low carb diet, but am still doing no starch. I found out that if I stay completely off starch my blood sugars fluctuate very little. Fruit and sugar don't appear to cause a problem as long as I stay off starch (and some if not all gums). So, maintaining a fairly even blood sugar seems to help with mood issues. Reading Ray Peat articles on his site on the Internet gave me the nerve to try this, because he believes fruit and sugar are actually healing to the body, and that starch should be kept to a minimum if not eliminated in the case of serious problems with the digestive tract. Carol Sinclair mentions in her book that she used to be very cold intolerant until she began her no starch diet. Ray Peat's articles give an explanation for this. She probably was hypothyroid, and getting off the starch and eating plenty of fruit and sugar helps the body recover from this.

The author states within the pages she also has a diagnosis of ankylosing spondylitis, which I unfortunately am suffering with. I think the book has a good general idea, it would be good for readers if the book was more specific at times in it. Sometimes to bring up something mentioning it will be brought up later in the book when it's really just a very short piece of information, it would help if it was put right there where we are currently reading. The book doesn't mention if high-protein quinoa would be acceptable for the studies have shown protein is needed for ankylosing spondylitis but not starch. Quinoa is very gigh in protein. I've been on the "no" starch diet for a month now without any results for ankylosing spondylosis, along with a heap of natural anti-inflammatories all doing absolutely mothing. I'm not on a 'low' starch diet, but a "no" starch diet due to the severity of the advanced disease that I have. It has gone so deep into the bones for me & eyes it is absolutely terrible. I just wish there was more for us that could be done. Anymore wonderful tips, successes, for the more advanced stages, I really need to hear them to help myself & others more. All powerful knowledge welcome.

This book has literally saved my life. I suffer from severe destructive ulcerative colitis. I was not able to tolerate any of the medications I was given for this disease. I was told to try a diet for Celiacs, which I did. I had one of the worst flares of my life from the disease on the celiac diet. Also, at that time, I developed terrible swelling in my joints and pain so bad that I was only averaging 2-3 hours of sleep a night. I then found this book that stated that perhaps starch may be the culprit in my digestive disorder, that would explain my severe reaction to all the gluten-free flours I was consuming on the Celiac Diet. I went on the diet immediately and I can tell you that within a few days I was sleeping through the night, experiencing very little pain and no bowel pain. I just had my latest colonoscopy and for the first time in years was completely without ulceration! I have done nothing else that could explain this remarkable development but follow this wonderful diet. Yes, I had to do some work to get organized. There are not a lot of recipes in this book, and yes I researched the starch content of foods and made my own list of low-starch foods, but I am the master of MY fate. I did not and never have expected anyone or any one book to hand me my life and health on a silver platter. So far, I am feeling better than I have in years. I am sleeping and walking and going shopping again without worrying about where the nearest bathroom is, that is a miracle. So if you ask me if you should buy this book I will say , 'Buy two, and squirrel one away in case you lose your only copy." I did. For those of us with IBDs this book may save your life. Trust me it is worth a try.
