Stephen Eskildsen's book offers an in-depth study of the beliefs and practices of the Quanzhen (Complete Realization) School of Taoism, the predominant school of monastic Taoism in China. The Quanzhen School was founded in the latter half of the twelfth century by the eccentric holy man Wan Zhe (1113-1170), whose work was continued by his famous disciples commonly known as the Seven Realized Ones. This study draws upon surviving texts to examine the Quanzhen masters' approaches to mental discipline, intense asceticism, cultivation of health and longevity, mystical experience, supernormal powers, views of death and dying, charity and evangelism, and ritual. From these primary sources, Eskildsen provides a clear understanding of the nature of Quanzhen Taoism and reveals its core emphasis to be the cultivation of clarity and purity of mind that occurs not only through seated meditation, but also throughout the daily activities of life.

Stephen Eskildsen is UC Foundation Associate Professor of Philosophy and Religion at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. He is the author of Asceticism in Early Taoist Religion, also published by SUNY Press.

It Is What It Is

There is no misdirection in the title of Stephen Eskildsen's book. It is a meaty compendium of the teachings and practices of early Taoist masters of the Quanzhen sect. Much of the content is taken from the writings of the masters themselves, giving authenticity to the book as a credible source. Eskildsen provides summaries of, and commentaries on, the quoted passages which add to the readability of the work. His comments reflect a common-sense attitude towards the sometimes extravagant claims of the masters. Eskildsen is no dupe, but neither is he a debunker. He allows for the shaping of ancient accounts of religious experiences according to the cultural expectations and historical traditions of the time. Some of his observations are tinged with a wry humor that adds to the informality of his presentation. The substance is there, but Eskildsen keeps it from becoming a boring collection of old bones. Notes are extensive and as informative as the text. Extensive bibliography and glossary of Chinese terms in both English and Chinese calligraphy. This is a solid resource for both students of Chinese religious history and practitioners of Taoism.

Essential study for Daoist inspiration

This book is a core book for students of the American Dragon Gate Lineage as the original founders are of this same lineage, that is, the Quanzhen lineage. Eskildsen's book has penetrated the various topics on the history of the Quanzhen and has opened these topics to modern day Daoists. So much has been researched on the different ages of Daoist history but yet, there is still so much left unknown on Quanzhen practices. At least Eskildsen has revealed some of these practices. Perhaps the most vital parts of his book are his translations by the Quanzhen founder, Wang Zhe. His poems of cultivation are essential to the understanding of what it means to be a practicing Daoist and not simply one who reads the Daode jing and thinks that is all it takes to be a Daoist. On the contrary, this book points out that the Daoist of high rank has a long way of cultivation. Highly recommended. Essential reading.

About the Author

Jeffrey S. Wilkinson is a professor of Journalism and Mass Communication at Houston Baptist University in Houston, Texas. Wilkinson is a specialist in international journalism with more than a decade teaching and researching mass media in China and Hong Kong. At United International College in Zhuhai he served two years as acting dean for the division of humanities and social sciences. He earned both his Master's and Ph.D. from the University of Georgia and areas of interest include Web journalism, video applications, writing, and reporting. Before that, he worked in radio and television news as a reporter, presenter, and talk show host.

August E. ("Augie") Grant is J. Rion McKissick Professor of Journalism at the University of South Carolina. Grant is a technology futurist who conducts research, teaches, and writes regarding convergent journalism, media technologies, audience behavior, and media organizational behavior. Grant created the Communication Technology Update and Fundamentals series, The Convergence Newsletter, and the Newsplex Summer Seminars. He earned his M.A.J.C. at the University of Florida and his Ph.D. from the Annenberg School at the University of Southern California, and serves as a consultant to media and high-tech organizations.

Douglas J. Fisher is a senior instructor at the University of South Carolina where he specializes in editing, new media, and community journalism. He spent 30 years as a broadcast, newspaper, and wire service journalist and is a former Associated Press news editor. He was a Kiplinger Fellow at Ohio State University, founded the Hartsville Today community journalism site and belongs to the NuzBiz consulting group. He writes the "Common Sense Journalism" blog and monthly column and is executive editor of The Convergence Newsletter.

The gold standard in repair manuals

If you already own the Chilton's guide, buy this. If you don't, buy this instead. They're both good by themselves, but the Haynes one seems to cover a bit more and explain it a bit better. Additionally, the Haynes one covers the Legacy specifically, while the Chilton guide tries to cover the entire Subaru range for those years, making it a bit more complicated to deal with if you don't want to wade through Justy and SVX-specific stuff. The only things the manual could have used were more detailed info about bodywork (though the dent repair guide is pretty great for only two pages) and the ECU, though I know both of those things changed a lot between '90 and '99, so I don't really hold that against Haynes much.

Great solid manual

Armed with this manual, you can do just about anything to your car. I used the manual mostly for technical specifications when removing the engine and replacing the head gasket, clutch, and a bunch of seals. Amazon (or ups) screwed up and sent it to the wrong address but it wasn't the manual's fault. Haynes is usually easier to follow than Chiltons in my experience.

With both the Haynes manual and the helpful forums on the internet...you can tackle even the biggest jobs as long as you take your time and read the instructions. Labeling wires and bagging bolts will help you put everything back together. Good luck!

Awesome manual. Arrive on time.

I think that with every car purchase from the dealer should come with one of these at least haha.

Easy to read, just not friendly to navigate through due to it's back and forth illustrations and certain job. Other than that it does cover everything that any garage mechanic needs.

This book is so easy to use

I have the first edition of this book and now the new third edition. It has been a resource in our home for many years. This book is so easy to use.
Part One covers almost 200 conditions. This section is over 600 pages long. Some of the varied conditions covered include diabetes, eating disorders, gluten sensitivity, hearing loss, herpes, Lyme disease, Parkinson's, toenail fungus, ulcers, and warts. Conditions are arranged in alphabetical order. Condition background, symptoms, and root causes are discussed, followed by testing techniques. The condition treatment section includes diet, recommended food and food to avoid. A "Super Prescription" section lists and describes supplements to address the condition. Also covered for each condition is a section of general recommendations, homeopathy, acupressure, bodywork (massage, reflexology, hydrotherapy), aromatherapy, stress reduction therapies, and other recommendations. References are given for each condition.
Part Two covers the essentials of natural medicine. This section includes information regarding diet and nutrition, supplements, herbal medicines, traditional Chinese medicine, and more.
Part Three is an appendix,glossary (really helpful), and index.
This book is a very thorough treatment of natural medicine and lifestyle. It is not a book you sit down to read, but rather a book you want at hand to help you deal with whatever condition you may be struggling with. This is an excellent reference book to have on hand..invaluable for the good health for yourself and your family. Some of these natural cures were practiced by my grand parents and proved true. I have used many of the natural cures and I am quite pleased.

Extraordinary Reference

Prescription for Natural Cures is an extraordinary medical reference. The authors speak plainly, so none of the information is shrouded in medical terminology. In other words, anyone should be able to find specific information that is clearly and precisely explained.

Part One contains an alphabetical listing of approximately 200 ailments, including some you won't find in other home medical references. For example, when was the last time you saw a home medical reference that included aging and how to combat many of the natural ailments associated with it? Each listed ailment begins with a brief, but fairly comprehensive, overview of the ailment. It then goes on to list symptoms, causes, and testing techniques. The treatment portion of the listing begins with diet, including foods which specifically should or should not be consumed. The next section is the Super Seven Prescription; the top seven natural remedies to combat the ailment. Next are sections with general recommendations, followed by other holistic approaches such as homeopathy, acupressure, bodywork, and aroma therapy, followed by other recommendations. The final section of each listing are references relating to the listing.

Part Two is The Essentials of Natural Medicine. This portion contains information on diet and nutrition, supplements, herbal medicine, homeopathy, aromatherapy, traditional Chinese medicine, hydrotherapy, natural hormones, bodywork, and exercise and stress reduction.

Part Three, the Appendix, is a brief natural health care resource guide. In this portion there are references to where to find more information on some of the various natural techniques mentioned in the treatment sections of the ailment listings.

Part Three is followed by a Glossary which gives brief descriptions of many of the terms used throughout Parts One and Two. The final portion of this reference is an alphabetical index which makes it easy to find specific listings.
