About the Author
Chris Sanders is an information security consultant, author, and researcher originally from Mayfield, Kentucky. That's thirty miles southwest of a little town called Possum Trot, forty miles southeast of a hole in the wall named Monkey's Eyebrow, and just north of a bend in the road that really is named Podunk.

Chris is a Senior Security Analyst with InGuardians. He has as extensive experience supporting multiple government and military agencies, as well as several Fortune 500 companies. Here's what you need to know about Applied NSM.

1. It's an amazingly easy read.

Those of us who have ever been forced into digesting anything ever published by Cisco Press know easy to read textbooks are diamonds in the rough. It's clear the authors of Applied NSM went to great lengths to be as technically thorough as possible while maintaining an easy, entertaining and conversational tone throughout the book. It's the anti "Makes Me Want To Bash My Face Into My Desk Just To Stay Awake" book.

2. The right tool for the job but...

The goal of any analyst is simple but crucial, find evil by any means necessary. To that end you need better weapons than your adversary. In this book Security Onion is your arsenal and the authors perform a deep dive into all wonderful toys Security Onion has to offer. The tools listed within the pages of this book are your ticket to a better way to find the badness lurking on your clients network. That being said...

3. ...tools alone will not save you and the authors know it.

Of all the weapons at your disposal in the never-ending hunt for evil, unequivocally the most important is that big spongy thing between your ears. This book isn't just a stack of man pages with a fancy cover thrown on, it provides valuable insight and guidance to aid your own unique thought process and hunting style. On that topic, a special note...

4. Get your mind right.

Chapter 15 "The Analysis Process" should be required reading for both every newbie working in a SOC and every jaded veteran. This chapter could be it's own book and if I have any complaint about Applied NSM it's that this chapter wasn't long enough for me. It's so absolutely crucial I recommend you read it first, then read it again. If you buy the book for no other reason, buy it for Chapter 15.

So that's it, whether you're a n00b looking to find his footing in this industry or a battle tested warrior looking for new ways to catch the bad guys, Applied Network Security Monitoring is an absolute must have. Good hunting!

Excellent guide for starting and expanding a Network Security Pratice.

Great book! If you are totally new to the practice of NSM then all you need to get set up, capture some data and start doing some analysis is in here. If you are already doing some NSM work, then this will help you extend and expand into new areas. The authors focus on open source / free programs and utilities, so the only cost to start a IDS is some hardware and your time.

I have been doing security for awhile, but not much focused intrusion detection before my current position. This book really helped "fill in the gaps" in my knowledge of NSM and give me a push in the right direction as far as using SiLK and a couple of the other tools. There is more then enough info to get started, but not to much that would be overly specific to a given setup, so it is still up to you to do a bit of research and dig deeper into the areas that the book introduces that you might want to use in your day to day work. You do need to have the basics of networking, security and TCP/UDP/IP down first, but they do a good job starting slow and building up.

I read through the book pretty quickly to pick up the areas I want to work in more, and will continue to use it as a reference in my work.

Well worth your time

Some of Applied Network Security Monitoring will be very familiar to anyone who has read any other security book–I’ve read many times that risk equals impact times probability. Every book on this topic needs this information, however, and Sanders and company cover it in sufficient detail to ground a probie while letting the rest of us easily skim it as a refresher.

Then they take us through selecting data collection points and how they make decisions on where to collect data and what kind of data to collect. Ideally, of course, you collect full packet data everywhere, but in my semi-rural gigabit ISP world I don’t have enough electricity to spin that much disk. Where can you get by with session data, and where do you need full packet capture? ANSM takes you through the choices and the advantages and disadvantages of each, along with some guidance on the hardware needs.

Data is nice, but it’s what you do with the data that makes security analysis interesting. ANSM uses Security Onion as an underlying toolkit. Security Onion is huge, and contains myriad tools for any given purpose. There’s reasons for this–no one NSM tool is a perfect fit for all environments. ANSM chooses their preferred tools, such as Snort, Bro, and SiLK, and takes you through configuring and using them on the SO platform. Their choices give you honeypots and log management and all the functionality you expect.

Throughout the book you’ll find business and tactical advice. How do you organize a security team? How do you foster teamwork, retain staff, and deal with arrogant dweebs such as yours truly? (As an aside, ANSM contains the kindest and most business-driven description of the “give the arrogant guy enough rope to hang himself” tactic that I have ever read.) I’ve been working with the business side of IT for decades now, and ANSM taught me new tricks.

The part of the book that I found most interesting was the section on analysis. What is analysis, anyway? ANSM takes you through both differential analysis and relational analysis, and illustrates them with actual scenarios, actual data. Apparently I’m a big fan of differential diagnosis. I use it everywhere. For every problem. Fortunately, Sanders and crew include guidelines for when to try each type of analysis. I’ll have to try this “relational analysis” thing some time and see what happens.

Another interesting thing about ANSM is how it draws in lots of knowledge and examples from the medical field. Concepts like morbidity and mortality are very applicable to information technology in general, not just network security monitoring, and adding this makes the book both more useful and more interesting.

Applied Network Security Monitoring is a solid overview of the state of security analysis in 2014, and was well worth my time to read. It’s worth your time as well.

A must read

This is a collection of sermons preached by John Henry Newman while he was the vicar of the Anglican church of St Mary's in Oxford, ie. before Newman became a Catholic. Because they were aimed at the university students, the sermons are somewhat academic in style, perhaps more like lectures than sermons, and I must admit that this book is not really an easy read. However it is definitely worth the effort.

This book contains ideas that were developed in later works by Newman. Sermons 10 to 14 focus on the relationship between faith and reason, a subject which the author would later explore most fully in his "Essay in Aid of a Grammar of Assent". And the final sermon is on the "Theory of Development in Religious Doctrine" , a subject to which Newman of course returned in his "Essay on the Development of Christian Doctrine."

I would definitely say that the sermons on faith and reason - "Faith and reason contrasted as habits of mind", "the nature of faith in relation to reason", "Love the safeguard of faith against superstition", "Implicit and explicit reason", and "Wisdom as contrasted with faith and with bigotry" - are worth reading for themselves. Newman's brilliance has not been dimmed by the passage of time since the 1800's, and I would say he still has a lot to say to us today, when there is, arguably, a danger of religion as a whole falling into disrepute, due to the actions of religious extemists on one hand, and the writings of people like Richard Dawkins on the other hand! Newman does remind us that faith in God can be a rational choice, does not have to lead to prejudice or bigotry,and that faith involves the mind and the heart.

I strongly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in Cardinal Newman's thought, and in fact it should be in the library of anyone with ambitions to be a Christian intellectual!

This is a powerhouse of a book. It can be very heady at times (considering it was written for the Oxford crew). There are so many great dynamisms of the faith that Newman discusses. Great read.

A Wonderful Resource For Maritime History Buffs

I first read "The Story of Sail" in 2000, not long after it was initially published, and was dazzled by the sheer number of drawings it contained. The book is hefty, over three hundred and fifty pages, and hundreds of types illustrated, from the earliest examples of humans learning to harness wind and waves, to experimental sailing craft of the late twentieth century.
As a reference book for the history buff, the book succeeds. As a resource for the student of maritime history, it provides the sources for the drawings, though in some instances a few mistakes were made. One which stood out to me was on page 56, "Nina in 1492 (i)". The authors list the source as Bjorn Landstrom's "Das Schiff" (The Ship); in this case the source should be the same as the Pinta, and even then this points to the book that the drawings were gleaned from (Heinrich Winter's "Die Kolumbuschiffe von 1492"). Which brings me to another minor problem I have with the book; many of these drawings are based upon work found in other books. That in itself is not so troublesome. However, in most cases within this book, the reference tends to stop there. In the case of the aforementioned Nina, the actual source is E.A. D'Albertis' work in 1892.
So the occasional source chase ensues.
Regardless, the book is still a wonderful reference to have. Recommended.

this is the best ref book on sailing ships that i know of. line drawings are great. very few mistakes overall. a must have for those interested in the history of ships.

Great story, watch out for Amazon's mislabelling of the order the books come in

This story is excellent and if you have played The Witcher videogames then you will appreciate it all the more (and vice versa)

I'm really just writing this review so people don't fall into the same trap that I did and skip over Swords of Destiny before reading this one. Amazon has this labelled as Book 2 and has Swords of Destiny labelled as Book 4. That is because Swords of Destiny was published later (the English version at least), but in terms of the story this is the order I would recommend reading them in: Last Wish, Swords of Destiny, Blood of Elves, Time of Contempt, Tower of Swallows, and Lady of the Lake (coming out in 2017). The Last Wish and Swords of Destiny are collections of short stories, but the rest all follow a specific story arc so it is really better to at least read the rest in the order that I mentioned. Hope that helps!

GREAT READ!

So I had not ever heard of these books or anything about this Universe at all until the last 2 years and then only because of the new 'The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt' video game coming out this month. As I started hearing and seeing allot about this game I started to look up what I could find oout about the story so I would have some kinda idea of what the game was gonna be about, names of characters, cities and Kingdoms and the such, I never really expected to find what I did. And I am SO GLAD I did, because this has turned out to be as exciting and endearing to me as Star Wars or Lord of The Rings, and thats no easy task but Geralt Of Rivia, Ciri, Triss, Yen, Dandellion and all the rest of the colorful characters have made a permanent home in my library of Books and video Games. A must read for any true fantasy/sci-fi f

Great Read (No Spoilers)

I was excited to read this book after reading BOTH of the short story books that precede it. It's from a different perspective than the other books. Less Geralt (more dialogue and less action) than the short story books, but it's great story telling nonetheless. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this, and am excited to move onto the next installment.

**IMPORTNANT** The second shorty story book that precedes this book, which gives a TON of background information (that I cannot imagine enjoying this book as much as I did without having), never got published in English! If you enjoyed The Last Wish and are considering this book, READ THE SECOND SHORTY STORY BOOK! It's super easy to find a (very readable) fan translation! Just Google 'The Sword of Destiny fan translation' and you'll find a .pdf, .epub, and .mobi (which works on the kindle) in no time. I cannot stress how important it is to read the second short story book first! It's a great read as well. A lot of the negative reviews on Amazon are from people who didn't read the second short story book! Don't make their mistake!

Incredibly Valuable at Any Price

I bought this book long ago, at a used book store, but never had the nerve to use it until a few months ago. I'm now in the middle of the eighteenth project in the book (there are 22 projects.) I've learned so much from this book and recommend it to anyone who wants to learn how to paint in oils. I made a major mistake by not following one of Mr. Stern's instructions exactly and it caused me tremendous grief. I hope to spare you the frustration I experienced by not doing as he said.

The book tells you to line the walls and floor of the setup box with "inexpensive assorted colored papers - the kind children use in school." I ignored this and (clever me!) decided to buy a variety of large, much more colorful sheets from a rack at Hobby Lobby. As a consequence, I would spend up to 20 minutes trying to match the color of a sheet of paper, and never succeed. I would simply give up and use the paint that was the closest match that I could produce. I realized just the other day why I could never match the paper's color. I was using the less expensive, student-grade paints recommended in the book. Since this kind of paint lacks the rich, intense pigment load of artist-grade paint, I could NEVER produce the bright, intense colors of the papers I bought. So do exactly what the author says to do: buy a pad of children's construction paper. The relatively dull, muted colors can be easily duplicated with student-grade paint.

Here's one other tip. The author tells you to make a "spot screen", which is a small rectangular piece of gray cardboard with a hole punched in it. You look at your subject through the hole to isolate an individual color. (It's funny that he refers to it as "gray"; elsewhere in the book he lists words like "gray", "brown" and "black" as taboo.) In any event, make sure the gray is a perfectly neutral gray, exactly midway between white and black and without any noticeable color tint. If the gray of your spot screen is too light, and you'll see and paint colors darker than they really are; if it's too dark, you'll see and paint colors lighter than they really are. And if the gray leans slightly towards some color, what you see through the hole will lean toward that color's complement; e.g., if your card's gray is slightly red, what you see through the hole will be slightly green.

To sum up, this book is a treasure trove of information, and if you faithfully do each project you'll be amazed at how much you learn, and how much your confidence grows.

Simply the best

Of the many books in my art instruction collection, I rate this one at No. 1. It has had the greatest influence on me of any lessons or books I've had. If you treat this book as a course in painting you will: 1) learn how to mix absolutely any color with dead-on accuracy, 2) get practical advice on setting up materials and aids (for example, his "spotter" to isolate colors -- simple but indispensible), and 3) become comfortable with the painting knife, which most amateur artists shy away from. Get this book and devote a few months to it. You'll never regret it.

(Note: He shows the use of oil paints. I prefer acrylics, and used them for these lessons without any problems.)

Waste no more time with flaky, new age egopainting. This is it.

Arthur Stern, student of the legacy of that almost-lost thread that has passed through Classical art, the Renaissance masters, the Baroque masters, into Chase, Hawthorne, Henri (and his students- Bellows, Hopper, Kent, etc.), the Bay Area artists (etc.), offers up the eye-clearing humility, without BS, that is necessary to see in order to paint what Cezanne called the "ensemble".

Akin to tuning a guitar, the method reveals that the harmony of the few notes ("spots" of value/hue/chroma) must be chorded before you learn how to glue an American flag and a photocopy of the Twin Towers to your 21st Century bombast. THE FUNDAMENTAL basis for painting. A pathway, not to be viewed as a fixed style or dogmatic cul-de-sac, but a route of initiation to Beauty.

Hawthorne/Hensche purists irk me with their holier-than-thou, plein air fascism (and some of their students with how-to books should be, with Thomas Kincaid, whipped), but I DO agree that THIS IS THE DOOR TO THE WAY. Beautiful, simple truth. Reprint Stern's book before the world ends.
