About the Author

Mauro was born in Italy in 1951. His family immigrated to the United States in 1959 and settled in Milford, MA, where he grew up and went to school. In 1970 he attended the New England School of Art in Boston and later attended the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and graduated with a BFA, majoring in Sculpture and with minors in Printmaking and Education in 1975.

He worked as an Art Teacher in his hometown of Milford MA. School System. After 3 years as a teacher he and his wife, Cynthia, decided to move out to California in 1978 where he hoped to enter the animation industry.

He got started out as a trainee character animator in the Disney Animation Training Program run by legendary Disney animator Eric Larson and next moved on to Hanna Barbera where he worked as a character animator on Saturday morning TV cartoons such as Godzilla, Superfriends, Scooby Doo and The Smurfs and the Hanna Barbera feature film, Heidi's Song.
In 1981 the opportunity to work with Frank Frazetta on the Ralph Bakshi production of "Fire and Ice" presented itself and he jumped at it, doing character and effects animation on that film.
Once production on "Fire and Ice" ended he returned to Disney to work on "The Black Cauldron".

In 1985 he decided to leave Disney and go into Live action special effects. Working at Richard Edlund's Boss Films Corp., as well as Perpetual Motion Pictures Studio and Dreamquest Studio, working on films such as, Poltergeist II, Big Trouble in Little China, Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure, and Alien III, and many others.
Baer Animation was next, working on TV commercials. Eventually returning once again to Disney in 1993 and worked there as an Effects Animator, Sequence Supervisor and Effects Supervisor/Head of Effects, on the films, Lion King, Hunchback, Hercules and many others until his last, Princess and the Frog in 2009.

Since leaving Disney, he has been freelancing on TV commercials and sculpting as a Studio Associate for Sculptor, Ron Pekar on a monumental sculpture for USC of their Mascot "Traveler" Football Legends Monument for the Rose Bowl stadium in Pasadena. Presently Mauro teaches Traditional Animation courses at Otis School of Art and Design in L. A. and The Laguna School of Art and Design in Laguna, Ca.
He may be retired from the animation business but he still draws and sculpts each and every day.
He just can't stop!

Anderson's humorous stories about Ginny and Steve Matuchek, set in an alternate contemporary America where most technology is based on magic, first began appearing in the 1950s and were novelized as Operation Chaos in 1971. In his latest novel (after Starfarers), Anderson continues the saga in a tale that features light-hearted cloak-and-dagger suspense, ingenious adaptations of magic to the routine of daily life, and an attempt to send magically endowed spacecraft, including a souped-up broomstick, to the moon under the auspices of NASA (the National Astral Spellcraft Administration). Anderson deals playfully with a number of different magical and religious traditions, centering on Zuni, Chinese and Norse lore. He also introduces a variety of eccentric human and supernatural charactersAincluding Bob Shining Knife, a skilled FBI agent who conducts his investigations in full Apache regalia; Fjalar, a dwarf who is supernaturally skilled at forging both iron and passports; a magical sword named Fotherwick-Botts that won't stop running off at the mouth; and Alger Sneep, an agent of the IRS (Inquisition for Revenue Securement), who attempts to derail the Matucheks' moon flight by quite literally putting them through the audit from hell. The humor can be arch at times, and Anderson's tendency toward thinly veiled libertarian political satire won't work for all readers, but in general this is an enjoyable tale by a veteran writer who knows exactly what he's doing. Belated and iffy sequel novel to a collection of linked stories, Operation Chaos (1971). The previous volume was set in an alternate world where the Industrial Revolution inhibited magic, so the surviving supernatural Beings spelled themselves to sleep. Later, a method was found to release the ``goetic forces'' (strong magic) and permit a grand Awakening. Now, Project Selene is ready to send a spaceshipa giant horse boosted by four broomsticks!to the moon. But the launch proves a spectacular failure, thanks to certain inimical supernatural influences. So the National Astral Spellcraft Administration calls in consultant witch Ginny Graylock and her werewolf/engineer husband Steve Matuchek. The two diagnose interference from the Trickster, Coyote, and other powers, possibly Chinese. Despite hassles from the IRS, Ginny and Steve receive authorization to proceed with Project Luna, their own smaller, quieter method of reaching the moon, since only there can they find out who's trying to destroy the space program, and why. Ginny will be assisted by her precocious 13-year-old daughter, Valeria, her familiar, Edgar the raven, and various friendly American Indian shamans. Steve flies off to England to find a powerful antique talking swordit now calls itself Fotherwick-Bottsalong with the sword's smith, the massive, uninhibited, hammer-wielding dwarf, Fjalar. Another Fine Novel from the SF Master!

Once again we have a joyful and entertaining novel from one of the last remaining masters from the Golden Age of SF. Close on the heels of STARFARERS comes this long-awaited sequel to his highly enjoyable OPERATION CHAOS. Set in the late 60's of his alternate universe were magic works, this novel deals with a Space Race with magic as the means vice straight technology. Along the way, Anderson takes some well-aimed shots at NASA, the IRS, and the government. A good read, particularly if you enjoyed OPERATION CHAOS.

If you know Poul Anderson's work, this book will be a delight. If you don't, read it -- and then the rest of his work!
OPERATION LUNA manages to pack space exploration, fantasy, and the 'Northern Thing' -- all Anderson specialties -- into one delightful package.

neat ideas hindered by an unsuspenseful narration

I was delighted when I heard that a sequel to _Operation Chaos_, a collection of loosely-related stories set in a techno-magical alternate Earth, had come out. Unfortunately, I can't recommend _Operation Luna_ as I would its prequel.
A lot of great elements are there: mankind's effort to reach the moon, our familiar protagonists from _Operation Chaos_ (Steve Matuchek, werewolf engineer, and Virginia Graylock, witch extraordinaire), a garrulous enchanted sword (named Fotherwick-Botts) from the Norse era and his forger, a dwarven smith who adjusts poorly to modern life, Coyote's schemes and uneasy dreams....
Alas, despite the attempts at levity, the story never really comes together. Steve Matuchek wasn't the best choice of a narrator. While he's definitely involved in the action in _Operation Chaos_, here he's relegated to reporting on everyone else's actions since, due to his lack of magical expertise, he can't actually get involved. As a result, a lot of potential suspense (will Virginia succeed in her quest for Mimir's knowledge? will their daughter Valeria survive her desperate attempt to foil the IRS?) trickles away. Another problem is that the evils and dangers confronted are rarely convincingly dangerous. Occasionally Anderson throws in social criticism of our world as it is (in contrast to this magical alter-Earth), but there isn't enough of it to fully convince, and it sits uneasily with the lighter tone of most of the story.
All in all, while it's a light and often entertaining tale, _Operation Luna_ fails to live up to the wit, fine worldbuilding and daredevil adventures of its prequel.

About the Author
Susan V. Crosson received her B.B.A. degree in economics and accounting from Southern Methodist University and her M.S. degree in accounting from Texas Tech University. She is currently teaching in the Goizueta Business School at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. Until recently, she was the Accounting Faculty Lead and Professor at Santa Fe College in Gainesville, Florida. She has also been on the faculty of the University of Florida; Washington University in St. Louis; University of Oklahoma; Johnson County Community College in Kansas; and Kansas City Kansas Community College. She is internationally known for her YouTube accounting videos as an innovative application of pedagogical strategies. In recognition of her professional and academic activities, she was a recipient of the Outstanding Service Award from the American Accounting Association (AAA), an Institute of Management Accountants' Faculty Development Grant to blend technology into the classroom, the Florida Association of Community Colleges Professor of the Year Award for Instructional Excellence, and the University of Oklahoma's Halliburton Education Award for Excellence. Currently, she serves as President of the Teaching, Learning, and Curriculum section of the AAA. Recently, she served as a Supply Chain Leader for The Commission on Accounting Higher Education which published "Pathways to a Profession" Charting a National Strategy for the Next Generation of Accountants. She has also served on various committees for the AICPA, Florida Institute of CPAs, and the Florida Association of Accounting Educators.

Belverd E. Needles, Jr., received his BBA and MBA degrees from Texas Tech University and his PhD degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He teaches financial accounting, managerial accounting, and auditing at DePaul University, where he is an internationally recognized expert in international accounting and education. He has published in leading journals and is the author or editor of more than 20 books and monographs. His current research relates to international financial reporting, performance measurement, and corporate governance of high-performance companies in the United States, Europe, India, and Australia. His textbooks are used throughout the world and have received many awards, including (in 2008) the McGuffey Award from the Text and Academic Authors Association. Active in many academic and professional organizations, he is immediate past vice president-education of the American Accounting Association. He received the Distinguished Alumni Award from Texas Tech University, the Illinois CPA Society Outstanding Educator Award and its Life-Time Achievement Award, the Joseph A. Silvoso Faculty Award of Merit from the Federation of Schools of Accountancy, the Ledger & Quill Award of Merit, and the Ledger & Quill Teaching Excellence Award. He was named Educator of the Year by the American Institute of CPAs, Accountant of the Year for Education by the national honorary society Beta Alpha Psi, and Outstanding International Accounting Educator by the American Accounting Association. He received the Excellence in Teaching Award from DePaul University.

This book is good and tells you how to do the things you need to do in a way that you learn and can get good grades. I sold it back but this was one that I actually thought of keeping, and recommend to others. It is easy to reference.

A must-read for anyone interested in population issues.

One reader below states that "Julian Simon is an idiot." The late Mr. Simon was clearly anything but an idiot. This same reader goes on to state that "the simple fact of the matter is that ANY level of growth in a closed system is unsustainable over a long enough period of time." That is true enough, but as Professor Simon points out, it isn't the issue. The issue is whether the limits of the closed system are sufficiently proximate so as to be relevant to policy decisions now. Professor Simon offers copious evidence to prove that whatever the ultimate physical limits of population growth might be (sunlight for photosynthesis striking the earth, land surface available for housing and farming), these limits are so very remote to be of essentially zero value in making policy decisions. Professor Simon illustrates this point by the following analogy: It is a generally-accepted fact that our Sun will burn out billions of years in the future. Thus, our Sun is ultimately a "closed system": only x amount of fuel, and then no more sunlight. While we can assume that this fact as true, it manifestly can have no reasonable bearing on our decisions today, since it is simply too remote. Professor Simon argues that the same is true for the carrying capacity for our Earth: ultimately we can perhaps talk about limits to resources, but it is demostrably true based on objective empirical evidence that these ultimate limits are so remote as to reduce them to irrelevance for any matter of public policy. Professor Simon convincingly argues that this is so for food production, living space, metals, wildlife, the environment, etc. I highly recommend reading this book along with Paul Ehlrich's "The Population Bomb." Professor Simon elsewhere shows the implications for the baby bust (to which books like "The Population Bomb" contributed) will have for solvency of Social Security and Medicare, as well as for the national security interests of the United States. I come away with the strong feeling that a furious hatred for mankind lurks behind the ZPG movement. Read this book, and pass it along to your friends.

ignorance about the economic and scientific
realities of resource use by H. sapiens. If
you preserve your ignorance of Simon's analysis,
you will continue to have the warm fuzzy feeling
of moral superiority over anyone who disagrees with your agenda.

Magnificent--a tribute to humanity; a rubuke to Malthusians

Now in a second edition, and what a treat that is, because now the unquenchable optimism and sound forcasting of the first volume is backed up by decades of confirmatory data. Resources of all kinds--foods, metals, energy--are more abundant and cheaper, life expectancy is up, and so is the worldwide standard of living. Why is this so, in spite of the dire warnings (The Population Bomb, Famine: 1975!) of the latest crop of doomsayers? Read the book and find out. Find out also, why these trends show no signs of turning around--why the world will be even richer and more prosperous in the next century.
A reader, in an earlier review, suggests that Simon's ideas are "ridiculous" (in spite of the fact that he has been proven right, time and time again, and the doomsayers have to come out with new books every few years, adjusting forward their predictions of a doomsday that never comes), and goes on to say some very stupid things about "limits to the food supply." Go read them, then consider--that review, like most doomsayers, admits startling progress in increasing food yields, then assumes that such progress is over, or nearly so (six millennia of agricultural advance to the contrary). Why? In the first hundred pages of this book, Simon details cutting-edge technologies being employed commercially _today_ that could raise worldwide food production by orders of magnitude. But the eco-tastrophe crowd keeps talking about "closed systems," in spite of the fact that every new technological innovation keeps making the "system" effectively larger and larger.

About the Author
Mark Z. Jacobson is Director of the Atmosphere/Energy Program and Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Stanford University. He is also a Senior Fellow of the Woods Institute for the Environment and of the Precourt Institute for Energy. He has been on the faculty at Stanford since 1994. His research involves the development and application of numerical models to understand the effects of energy systems, vehicles and other emission sources on climate and air pollution and the analysis of renewable energy resources. He received the 2005 American Meteorological Society Henry G. Houghton Award, based in part on his discovery that black carbon may be the second-leading cause of global warming after carbon dioxide. He co-authored a 2009 cover article in Scientific American (with Dr Mark DeLucchi) on how to power the world with renewable energy. In 2010 he was appointed to the Energy Efficiency and Renewables Advisory Committee by the US Secretary of Energy. He has taught courses on Atmospheric Pollution and Climate; Weather and Storms; Air Pollution Modeling; and Numerical Weather Prediction. He has published over 110 peer-reviewed journal articles and another textbook: Fundamentals of Atmospheric Modeling (Second Edition, 2005; Cambridge University Press).

Excellent Primer and Reference on Air Pollution

Atmospheric Pollution is an excellent primer and reference on air pollution and air quality issues facing the world today. Written essentially as a textbook, nevertheless, it is highly readable and a good, basic, factual overview of the pollutants, pollutant processes, laws and regulations, and current issues in air quality protection.

Wow.

I was never abused, nor was I an abuser, but wow. This short book of poetry had me so wound up in empathy for my spouse, who was abused, it helped me to understand her mentality more clearly.

An enjoyable story

An enjoyable and engrossing story! It is such a nice change of pace to have both the hero and heroine written as good, upstanding people. They are just caught up in circumstances that threaten to destroy their love for each other. These two are very easy to love and root for. I especially loved the fact that Benjamin respected and honored Pheobe's virtue enough to hold himself back until their wedding night (don't worry that was fairly soon in the book) Hooray! A truly honorable man, for a change!

Their reactions to some of the events, however, seemed extremely juvenile and at times, roll-your-eyes silly. At first one can make an allowance for Pheobe, she's young and naive, after all, but after having (supposedly) learned from her mistake, she immediately repeats it by staying in her room and refusing to speak to Benjamin for six (yes, SIX) days because he won't divulge her Mother's secret!?!? Benjamin, on the other hand is supposed to be older, wiser and more responsible to begin with, yet after their first fight, he runs aways for THREE weeks!! Hmmmm, see what I mean?

This is what a series should be like

Earlier I wrote a negative review of "A Lesson in Passion" because the end of the book leaves you hanging and you have to buy SIX more books to find out what happens. I don't think so! This book is also one in a series of books but it is the type of series I enjoy. Each book in the series is about another character and is a standalone book in its own right. Reading additional books gives another complete story but just lets you see a little bit more into the lives of characters you have met in a previous book.

However, in "A Gentleman Never Tells" I thought that Ben perhaps took the "honor" thing a little bit too far when he refused to tell Phoebe the truth about how her father died and left her thinking he had killed him. I sometimes grow weary of reading about people who keep things hidden from a loved one "for their own good" and refuse to reveal the truth until it comes back to bite them in the behind! I subscribe to the belief that the only way you KNOW you can keep a secret is if you are the only one who knows it...otherwise, the truth will probably eventually come out. I did enjoy the book and with slight reservations, recommend it.

Charming Beginning to a Charming Series

Benjamin needs a wife to produce and heir. Phoebe needs a husband to keep her and her mother out of debtor's prision. They find in each other a solution to each of their problems. They also find an enduring love. The chemistry (physical and emotional) is nicely displayed in this story. Their are some steamy scenes, if that bothers you. The supporting characters are equally as charming. Katherine, Benjamin's sister, provides a light humor to the story. I found some parts of the story bland and predicatble, almost like the author felt she needed a filler of sorts. One of my favorite parts was the Epilogue. But, overall this is a sweet, quick historical romance that is worth the time to read. I have also read the other in the series and they are equally as delightful.

Compelling argument for watching films with a purpose

What I enjoyed about this book is it smartly challenges lines of conventional thinking about why we shouldn't watch certain movies, which Christians sometimes recite without much consideration. The author doesn't give an excuse to watch just anything, but helps the reader understand how to watch movies, and look for content that most people would never consider. Highly instructive and written with a wry sense of humor it provides the reader with practical information about story structure, and why a story does or doesn't work. Highly recommended.

Will Change the Way You Watch Movies

This book takes a different approach to the relationship between Christians and film. Instead of exploring the boundary of what is acceptable for Christians to watch, Nehring analyzes the nuts and bolts of what makes movies so compelling to Christians and non-Christians alike. Once we get a peak at the machinery of cinematic story-telling, we can better understand how they influence us. Trained in this way, we make better choices, and can talk intelligently about one of the most important cultural forces we face. Nehring uses irreverent humor and lots of examples to teach how stories and characters combine to produce a message in a film. It's fun and eye-opening at the same time.

Great Book on an Important Topic!

I have read many books on Christians and Cinema (e.g., Real Spirituality, Hollywood Worldviews, ReViewing the Movies) but You Are What You See goes beyond these other books by entertaining, informing, encouraging, and challenging the reader. In my view the great contribution of this book is its description of story structure, and how the story structure is the key to the worldview of the film (and every film has a worldview), and that the worldview of the film is of great importance as we evaluate what we are watching. You will never watch movies the same way after reading this book, and you will be glad that you don't!

An Excellent Update! Required Reading for anyone owning a guitar.

Dan Erlewine's latest edition of the Guitar Player Repair Guide is a worthy update. There are numerous additions and updates anyone familiar with the previous editions should check out. If you are new to the guitar, this book is the maintenance and repair guide than will help you maintain your investment, and even give you great tips on how to hod-rod, customize or fix your guitar.

The book is organized and logically arranged with Basic, DIY and Deep sections in each chapter. Electric, Acoustic and Bass guitars are all covered with detailed narrative and clear pictures.

Even if you are not up to jobs like fret work or truss rod adjustments, this book will prepare you to talk with your friendly neighborhood guitar repair guy about getting your guitar back to its former glory.

Very highly recommended. Make this your first purchase for your guitar dedicated bookshelf (doesn't everyone have those?).

Good for intermediate, bad for beginners

The book provides amazing detail on all aspects of maintaining and repairs guitars. If you have at least intermediate guitar experience its a great book for guitar upkeep. However for casual users and anyone who is hoping to get into this type of repair look elsewhere. It gives little explanation for those with a lack of basic knowledge and you'll spend more time looking up diagrams and terminology then reading the book.

The write is slightly biased towards certain guitars, which while popular and common, are not owned by everyone. Chapters that should be basic universal guitar help are used to spout particular brands and their specific upkeep which doesn't help those on off brand guitars. If you own a Fender or Gibson you'll be set but most other brands are left in the wayside

To summarize good for more experienced users, bad for those starting out. Good for anyone owning a guitar who wants upkeep help. Better for anyone owning a Fender or Gibson. Despite the negative comments if you have the basics down this book provides excellent tools for items as basic as cleaning your finish to repairing rotting tuners. A great book for a serious guitarist to own.
