The book is a nice way if you are a little bit rusty with your enterprise skills and like to refresh those. If you are new to the topic the samples and explantations are a little bit too short and you have to figure out some stuff on your own.

Very information dense book

This is a very information dense book. I was prepared to be disappointed when it arrived because it was so thin. I was instead very pleased. The book is a walkthrough of a little RESTful web services application automating a hotel booking agency. The code examples downloadable from PACKT Published have all worked without any bugs and I have found only one insignificant typo in the book. Highly recommend.

Good book overall. Worth the money for the most part. Explanations need to be more thorough though, found some gaps which I had
to fill in myself so I had to take off one star. Had to do some research to get the examples to work when using other databases
like Oracle.

The text, which is livelier than that in Machines, features fascinating descriptions of the process of inventing with conjectures on what an early human might have observed and adapted. Some of the ingenious conveyances described will amaze readers. The authors allude to the migration of technologies across cultures, including the suggestion that the wheel was only invented once. This book covers the stunning engineering feats of the ancient world in true detail. This is written for kids ages 8-12. This is a beautiful book 7.5 x 9 inches. Hardbound, & sturdy, with some 88 lavish glossy pages & enough maps, photographs, & reproductions of period art. The clear diagrams help for illustrating the machines that are so well described. The book starts with 6 machines: the wheel & axle, inclined plane, lever, pulley, wedge, & screw.

The first chapter treats the Stone Age & shows ways in which early humans may have used the benefits behind the levers & wedges. Many readers may be surprised to learn that bows were associated with fire & drilling before arrows? Various ancient cultures are surveyed regarding the developments they made in machine technology. Example: the wheel & axle revolutionized transportation & then gave birth to spinning thread, lathes, & pulleys in Mesopatamia.

The reader will learn about the Chinese combining the wheel, lever, & axle to create the first wheel barrel. How the Roman engineer Quintus Candidius Benignus built the factory at Barbegal that could grind over 9,000 pounds of flour per day, more than enough to feed the 12,000 citizens of Arles. The text is followed by a brief glossary, bibliography, & index.

The authors style is clear & consise,. he does not patronize the lay reader which is clearly great for kids so they don't get turned off with technical terms. Many concepts in anthropology & history are also included. An example, the mystery of why the ancients did not take full advantage of their mechanical aptitudes is examined in the context of social factors like slavery & war.

I was disappointed in this book. It's very thin and has only basic information for children, although the explanations are pretty clear. There are 83 pages of larger type--not including the glossary and index.

About the Author

Amy Wagenfeld received a BS in occupational therapy, an MA in human development, and a PhD in education. Amy has 20 years of clinical experience, with a majority of those years spent in various pediatric contexts, including school systems, outpatient pediatric rehabilitation clinics, and private practice. Amy is on the faculty at Lasell College in Newton, MA. In addition to her teaching and mentoring duties, Amy is the Clinical Director of Children's Therapy Connections, which provides consultative services and workshops to parents, administrators, teachers, and childcare providers.

Amy's research interests include the influence of music on the development of early attachment connections between babies and primary caregivers as well as the human-animal connection. Amy has presented her work on occupational therapy, human development, and attachment at local, state, and national conferences. Amy is also involved with several state and local nonprofit advocacy and community service organizations and is in the process of writing several other books on topics related to occupational therapy, attachment, and animal-assisted therapy.

In addition to her professional responsibilities, Amy is a passionate organic gardener. Amy, her husband Jeff, their wonderful and amazing 17-year-old son David, and incredibly spoiled dog Glacier live in suburban Boston, where they all enjoy traveling, long walks, trips to the beach, and tennis.

Jennifer Kaldenberg is Director of Occupational Therapy Services at New England College of Optometry and the New England Eye Institute. She received her BS in occupational therapy from the University of New Hampshire and an MSA in Administration with a concentration in Health Care Administration from Central Michigan University. Jennifer has over 10 years of clinical experience, with a majority of those years spent in neurological and visual rehabilitation. Jennifer previously was an assistant professor at Lasell College in Newton, MA and currently lectures at the New England College of Optometry.

Jennifer's research interests include the impact of vision on functional independence, visual perception, and neurological visual impairment. She has spoken extensively on the role of occupational therapy in vision rehabilitation to occupational therapy practitioners, optometrists, and the general public.

In addition to her professional pursuits, Jennifer and her husband Casey are the proud parents of three wonderful boys who all enjoy participating in sporting activities and traveling together. In her free time, Jennifer enjoys painting, drawing, and cooking.

I used this book as an OTA student and now use it frequently as an OT student, in class and on fieldwork. It's better than the book I had to buy for OT school. I like how it's set up and the layout makes it easy to find what I'm looking for. Straightforward and practical information.

An Artifact in Itself.

A dozen specialists assemble to discuss their speciality. They write papers and read them to one another. The papers repeat what they know and a few things that are new. These are published in a book.

They remind each other that a parasang was a unit of time, not space; that Xenophon was often self-serving; and that motives of Greeks on the march were mixed. These are worth being reminded of, but not new. Recent discoveries in Persian studies are mentioned, but not examined. None realizes that the Cyropaedea is as much a treatise on an ideal curriculum, an issue that was on Plato's mind, as it is an encomium for Cyrus. Many, based on their own attention spans, are certain that Xenophon could not possibly have reported long speeches verbatim, decades after the fact, without contemporaneous notes. None speculates that Xenophon's name, "foreign voice," might have significance.

The book covers important issues and reports current directions of scholarship for specialists in other fields as well as laity. But its most interesting aspect may be the character of examiners themselves. Their intellectual style, strategies, and speculations reveal the pathology of those who dedicate themselves to knowing more and more about less and less. Specifically, Lombardo ties organized crime to the emergence of machine politics in America's urban centers. From nineteenth-century vice syndicates to the modern-day Outfit, Chicago's criminal underworld could not have existed without the blessing of those who controlled municipal, county, and state government. These practices were not imported from Sicily, Lombardo contends, but were bred in the socially disorganized slums of America where elected officials routinely franchised vice and crime in exchange for money and votes. This book also traces the history of the African-American community's participation in traditional organized crime in Chicago and offers new perspectives on the organizational structure of the Chicago Outfit, the traditional organized crime group in Chicago.
