A practical and useful approach to O-O projects, UML and UP.

This is a rare find. It is a useful combination of many related software engineering topics, with enough O-O history to provide some perspective, and enough detail on the Unified Process & the Unified Modeling Language to provide both an understanding and a practical series of steps for project success.
If your department tries to balance doing things right with doing things quickly, if you're wondering why the UML has become the de facto notation, if you're using Java and want your group to do more object-oriented approaches, if you're thinking you'd like to use Java, or you'd like to use the UML for your design notations, if you've heard object-oriented engineering can provide some benefit.. then you'll probably find this book to move to the top of your 'must read and must share' list.
If you're moving your architecture towards distributed objects and Enterprise JavaBeans, there's some useful advice on designing Java-specific objects.
It is clearly written and easy to follow, and can be read chapter by chapter or as a reference text. I would have only one suggestion for the author. He briefly mentions the similarity between O-O and the Spiral Model or the UP and the Spiral Model. Mr. Hunt would have done well to include an overview of the Spiral Model in his work. [Search the Software Engineering Institute at Carnegie Mellon for more info. Our design team considers the Spiral Model an important and practical and even useful approach to software engineering projects. Combine the Spiral Model methodology for projects, the Unified Process approach to designs, and the Unified Modeling Language for design notations, and you've got what we consider to be a winning approach to object-oriented software development.
Mr. Hunt provides a valuable book on the UP and the UML with a real world perspective. We're going to buy copies of his book for our entire team.

Shows how to use RUP in real life

Easily approachable and good. The book talks not just about RUP, but also about its roots (OMT, Fusion, objectory etc), and about UML. It also guides the reader through the maze of workflows in the RUP and gives advice on how to configure RUP as a lightweight process for web development. This book is a great contrast to all the other RUP books that are too theoretical to be of any use except for those who already are using RUP.

The book really is for practitioners...

Its good. Once you get over his British writing style, its a good read. I'm only 1/2 way through, but I have found it very accessible so far. Not only does he talk about the UML diagraming, he talks about the Unified Process (in like 250 pages! - now thats a refreshing break). The book delivers what it promises. Its not a reference guide, but it is definitly *teaching* me some practical stuff.

Just the Basics Nothing Special

This was a required book for my class and ended up being about $35 cheaper then through the college. The book goes over the basics and for the most part, if you have good common sense you wont really need to read the chapter to answer the questions. Over all its a book that has questions in it, and in my opinion a waste of money for me...

I didn't enjoy this book at all. I haven't met a book I didn't like in all of my life, but this one just took all of my life force and pulled it out of me. The experience was painful.
If you are a professor don't subject your students to torture. Choose something else.
Sorry Mrs.Knapp, I hope you never find out that I despise your book. It's not personal.

Book is fine. I needed it for a college class. It's kinda basic knowledge and concepts, but I didn't have any input as to what book was chosen for the class. It's not one I'll add to my library, but it fits the need for a CS class.

Terrible...

This was the first book I'd read by this author and it will be the last. It was absolutely horrible. Ridiculous storyline. Horrendous editing, I mean the main female character's name changed 3 different times. And the punctuation, don't even get me started. I normally read a book in one sitting, but this one was so bad, it took two days. I actually started skipping pages at the end just to get it over with. Absolutely no connection between the two main characters. The only reason I'm wasting any more time on this book is to warn others not to waste their time or money on it. I honestly don't know how it got 4 and 5 star reviews.

Enjoyable Read.

I enjoyed this shifter romance book. Weston and Celia are very likable characters with a well formed storyline. I liked the characters interaction with each other and the flow of the story. The drama and action were nice and held my attention until the end of the story. I read this book in one sitting and enjoyed it.

Think Of It As A Road Trip

This shifter story was quite an interesting and enjoyable read. Weston is a better than average looking guy; the kind women stop to look at a second time. Weston has been working in a bar for the past three years; he hates the night life but somehow he has wound up a part of it. Celia was always in the bar; she was a regular and a complete mess – always drunk or in the process of getting drunk every time Weston saw her. She could be beautiful if she wasn’t so out of control – but he doesn’t realise she is just a complicated girl. He has noticed her before and had the urge to help, but it was against his policy – he didn’t get involved. When Celia has a confrontation with the Keepers of the Faith, everything changes. This gang are not used to hearing the word “no” and Celia’s life is threatened. Weston reveals his Bear, so he has no alternative but to flee, taking Celia with him – fortunately, they have someone to turn to for help. Their journey to safety is not easy when they are confronted by danger at every turn. But Celia knows she can trust Weston and he will keep her safe. Weston finally realises that he is being pursued by someone from his past; they have been looking for him and have given him an ultimatum; he has a decision to make – one that involves Celia. The storyline has a lot to offer and was quite appealing. I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Well Written, Lacks Proof of Facts. Extremely Speculative

I am not a member of the NYPD but I do live in NYC and am interested in cultural issues. I picked up this book and found it to be a good read, well written, (however, numerous grammatical and editing errors abound) but also a highly speculative book.

The author has encountered a SERIOUS credibility issue after this book was written in large part because he writes extensively about his close relationship with disgraced New York politician and former NYPD cop Hiram Monserrate. Monserrate, potrayed as a good guy by the author, has been convicted of assault, and its obvious to anyone who followed the story that he was also someone who entered into a huge coverup regarding the crime so he would not be convicted of a felony, vs the misdemeanor. Hiram is a disastrous and disgraced status in state politics, and it really burns Castro's credibility to see how he puts him on a throne. Monsserate was thrown out of the NYPD with a psychological disability - yet Castro would be quick to point out that he was discriminated because he was latino. Hmmmm. You should also know that Castro was on Hirams defense during the girlfriend bashing case, working as a investigator to prove him innocent. That smells dirty.

The author does not provide a index with any documentation of many of the cases or incidents he claims happened. Many of these were public events, and so there could and should have been a index of sources.

Secondly, the author, while he probably does have the right to feel he was discriminated against by being Latino, takes his personal vendetta a little to far. He constantly adds the word "spic" without proof, suggesting people were thinking this or saying this in situations, when it just cant be proved. It seems the author is paranoid that everyone is racist or constantly viewing his as a "spic." The author, in so many words, clearly shows his lack of self esteem about his own race over and over again in this book. By the end of the book, you start to think Castro is the racist, because he really uses the term "white" in trashy tones, and is just so clearly paranoid about race.

Castro was a loud mouth, unreliable and unpredictable cop, albeit a self proclaimed good one, there should be no wonder he was under the microscope. Any big organization or Company would have done the same to a loud and troublesome employee to cover themselves, be them any race. The sense is after reading this book, Castro felt he had to be loud and noisy about everything just because he WAS latino.

No doubt the NYPD is a organization with troubles, like ANY organization. But Castro's lack of evidence, lack of documentation and his speculative and "suggestive" tone is not good police work. One would expect a policeman to know better. Might this be what landed him out of the NYPD?

As a retired detective with over twenty years in one of the most prestigious units in the NYPD I can say that I conducted hundreds of investigations. Proudly, my investigative training and expertise always resulted in me catching the bad guy. Criminals are caught many times because they leave behind signatures. These signatures can range from phrases, to marks on a wall or particular method of handwriting just to name a few. Interestingly enough when I read the review by Greg NYC, his words jumped off the page and hit me in the face. The old familiar abusive language and condescending statements reminded me of an old friend of mine from the NYPD. The review by Greg NYC who sounds eerily like J. Brandt, the gadfly of his unit is nothing more than a diatribe. Brandt who is a close friend of the author chose to write about the author's relationship with disgraced NYS Senator Hiram Monserrate and that the author used bad judgment for speaking highly about Monserrate, twelve years before Monserrate was convicted of misdemeanor assault. How is that a review? Furthermore, the author doesn't write extensively about his relationship with Monserrate, however, J.Brandt writes about their friendship because he knows how close they were as he too is close with both of them. For whatever reason in his sick mind J. Brandt decided to write such a ridicules and idiotic review about NYPD Blue Lies only he knows. J. Brandt claims that this book is highly speculative. That is a crock of manure, every single act of misconduct written about in NYPD Blue Lies that was committed by corrupt police officers can be verified by going to Charles Castro's website. In fact many of the incidents that J. Brandt claims were "speculative" were highly publicized cases. Castro's biggest point is that even as heinous and highly publicized as these cases were, many cops were given menial punishments. J.Brandt even goes on to call his close friend a racist. Maybe J. Brandt has Alzheimer's or dementia did you forget the fact that Castro helped to organize a $27 million dollar lawsuit against the NYPD for racial discrimination and won. NYPD Blue Lies is a book that I read in four days, it captivated me from beginning to end. I don't know Charlie Castro well but I do know that he is a funny individual and some of the stories in this book had me peeing in my pants. Overall the book is very well written yet it can be offensive to some readers who may differ with Charlie Castro's point of view.
