Just for Fun: The Story of an Accidental Revolutionary, by Torvalds. Linus & David Diamond

In 1991, at the age of 21, Linus Torvalds, then a student at Helsinki University, sat down in his mother's apartment and wrote the powerful Linux operating system. Perhaps even more astounding than his programming prowess is what Torvalds did with it: he gave it away - free! The Linux operating system became available to anyone who wanted to download it. Instead of money, Torvalds asked people for suggestions to improve the system. Thus emerged the free software movement (known today as "Open Source") and an operating system that is more powerful and stable than anything that Microsoft can offer. As well as becoming a computer genius, Torvalds became Bill Gates' number one enemy. Today, LINUX is exploding on to the market, and its creator is a household name. Linus Torvalds is already a folk hero within the technolgy world, often mobbed at trade shows and forever asked to give interviews by the media. But Torvalds is a most unlikely celebrity: a family man, he lives in a cramped house in Santa Clara with his wife, Tove, a Finnish karate champion, and their two daughters. He claims to this day that he invented LINUX "just for fun".

Amazon.com Review
Most 31-year olds can't boast of being the instigator of a revolution. But then again, the world's leading promoter of open source software and creator of the operating system Linux does humbly call himself an accidental revolutionary--accidental being the operative word here. Just for Fun is the quirky story of how Linus Torvalds went from being a penniless, introverted code writer in Helsinki in the early 1990s to being the unwitting (and rather less than penniless) leader of a radical shift in computer programming by the end of the decade.

OK, perhaps "story" in the traditional sense of the term is stretching it a bit. This whole book is more like a series of e-mails, an exercise in textual communication for someone more used to code language than conversation: choppy sentences packed into short paragraphs, and sometimes just one-liners. The pace is fast, but the quippy tone can get somewhat tiring, though it definitely suits the portrayal of a computer-dominated life. And like an e-mail conversation, the tense often changes, the topics jump back and forth, and the narrators occasionally change, mostly alternating between the Linux man himself and Red Herring executive editor David Diamond, who convinced the difficult-to-pin-down Torvalds to write his story (or at least allow Diamond to poke, prod, and pull it out of him, all the while giving his own impressions and interpretations). But Torvald's tale contains enough informative and entertaining tidbits--on growing up in dark, strangely silent but communication-gadget-obsessed Finland (which boasts more cell phones per capita than anywhere else), on what makes passionate code writers tick, on making the transition from unknown computer geek to world-famous computer geek, on the convergence of technology and ideology, on his work for Transmeta and involvement (or lack thereof) with all the players worth mentioning in Silicon Valley - to keep more than just computer programmers engrossed in his story. For the latter, of course, Just for Fun will be required reading.

If you pick up this book as a geek's guide to the meaning of life (which, believe it or not, Torvalds does ramble on about at the beginning and the end), then you're in for a bit of a shallow take on the whole thing. But if you're interested in the idea of technological development as a global team sport, and how a nerdy Finnish transplant to California got the whole game going in the first place, check out Linus's story... just for fun, of course. --S. Ketchum

From Publishers Weekly
The autobiography of a career computer programmer, even an unorthodox one, may sound less than enthralling, but this breezy account of the life of Linux inventor Torvalds not only lives up to its insouciant title, it provides an incisive look into the still-raging debate over open source code. In his own words (interspersed with co-writer Diamond's tongue-in-cheek accounts of his interviews with the absentminded Torvalds), the programmer relates how it all started in 1981 with his grandfather back in Finland, who let him play around on a Vic 20 computer. At 11 years old, Torvalds was hooked on computersespecially on figuring out how they ran and on improving their operating systems. For years, Torvalds did little but program, upgrading his hardware every couple of years, attending school in a desultory fashion and generally letting the outside world float by unnoticed, until he eventually wrote his own operating system, Linux. In a radical move, he began sharing the code with fellow OS enthusiasts over the burgeoning Internet in the early 1990s, allowing others to contribute to and improve it, while he oversaw the process. Even though Torvalds is now a bigger star in the computer world than Bill Gates, and companies like IBM are running Linux on their servers, he has retained his innocence: the book is full of statements like "Open source makes sense" and "Greed is never good" that seem sincere. Leavened with an appealing, self-deprecating sense of humor and a generous perspective that few hardcore coders have, this is a refreshing read for geeks and the techno-obsessed.

Who is Linus Torvalds, the Creator of the Linux kernel of course, and this is his story.
By Viper Pilot
The Linus Torvalds book is great reading with honest candor. The Inventor, Founder, Maintainer, Giver of the Linux operating system kernel speaks of the motivations, reasons, and how he recoded a 1970s Bell Laboratories "UNIX code" to become something the mainstream computer Users can run on their personal computers. This is the story of a person seeing a problem and solving it with economy. He realized that not every person can afford the software upkeep to slow the degradation of computer hardware investment. (Our family Apple IIe system with all the "trimmings" cost over US$2,683 in 1984.) From one person comes Linux giving it to all in the world. And Linux is the reason we now have cheap Android phones, new toys, and new technologies made affordable today.

Today there is no Apple Computers support for Apple IIe hardware. Then there is NTS's Operators Supervisor computer system with the ancient Intel 8086 inside the IBM's PS/2 system and that has no IBM support. Along comes Linux, presently Linux has run on Intel processors as far back as the 80386, 80486, 80501, 80552, as far back as AMD K5, K6-II, K6-III, as far back as Cyrix C3 (ancient processors, but they still have their uses). Linux runs all many calculators, some deep space telescope clockdrives, Tunneling LASERs for the Electronic Microscopes, MRI diagnostic machines at hospitals, etc. Yes, Linus Torvalds spent eight years of his life re-coding the UNIX operating system and then giving it to this world so that that "User" average can have his cake and eat it. All this without cost to the User.

With the popularity of Linux increasing (today there are over 37,840+ distributions, variants, editions, and versions of Linux, many are still classified) its reach widens every year, from controlling toys, communication devices, plastic surgery, drones, hyper-technologies, quantum relativity research, IBM's Quantum processors, Honda's on board automotive GPS, many automobiles, trucks, RVs, snowmobile, sea cycles, electric motorcycles, etc are running some form of Linux. Almost everything can run on Linux operating systems because many mainstream distributions require a lot less computer hardware resources than UNIX, Windows, or Mac OS-X operating systems. Matter of reality, some of the smallest complete distributions of Linux operating systems are only 13 KiloByte, 3 MegaByte, 10 MegaByte, 14 MegaByte in size and never requires any storage device making for extremely "hack proof" computer systems and networks. There are at least one distribution of Linux for almost every computer processor ever manufactured. This means cellular, satellite, and even HAM radio transceivers.

Linux operating systems run on 98% of this world's super computers. Linux operating systems run on 100% of the world's Quantum Processors.
Linux run on 100% of the world's faster than light computers because its the simplest and most reliable. Have a project that requires a Main Frame or Super Uber Computer System? Linux can "Cluster" together millions of plain old even obsolete computer systems to calculate and solve a problem like a gigantic main frame (abeit slower of course, but very affordable with old computers). Some versions of Linux operating systems can controller 8,192 processors simultaneously without a hiccup. Enough of this, up to the Reader to learn the rest.

With quantum processors on the way soon, data processing will be at the speed of light at last. Though the operating systems must keep up with the security and monitoring and here Linux shines. The coding is compact, fast, compatible, reliable, most importantly accessible.
UNIX, Windows, and Mac OS-X are not end User accessible-- they will sue the User for modifying their code. Linux does not require a storage device... hint, in A.D.1960 there were no floppy discs, no magnetic hard disks, and no FlashROM memory. Less hardware, less traffic, more speed. User can install Linux just into the main logic board's main memory run Linux and all software in real time without extra delays.

As Technical Support folks, we are not prejudice about what operating systems to use to help our customers. All operating systems have their strengths and weaknesses, but Linux is that much stronger and versatile because the Creator made certain it is the better and progressing to become the best end User computer operating system ever to come from a single human mind!

An Inspiring and Authentic Underdog Story
By David Kopec
Linus tells his story from the heart. From being a college student living at home spending inordinate amount of time staring into a computer screen (and little time doing much else - your stereotypical computer geek if you will) to being a minor celebrity in 2001 when this book was published, Linus tells his story in his own words. He includes the emotions, personal anecdotes, and enough family/childhood background to understand his motivations.

Do his opinions on the meaning of life, celebrity, or even semi-technical issues like the underpinnings of Mac OS X matter that much to the average reader? Probably not. They probably only matter to his most die hard fans, which seems ostensibly whom this book is aimed at. Yet, at the same time, they make for interesting reading since his famously brutal honesty is on full display throughout the book. I would in fact expand the audience a little bit further to include most technical people involved with the software world - frankly a significant portion of the book could be boring/incomprehensible to those with no background in software.

Just for Fun also includes an interesting dual narrative, featuring the ghost writer (David Diamond) taking on full first person voice for some chapters (clearly indicated in italics). At first these interludes may seem jarring, but overtime they reveal more about Linus's character and story than we would get from the "Linus chapters" alone. Neither the chapters by Linus nor the chapters by Diamond are particularly well written, but they're also not unnecessarily long, flowery, or philosophical. Linus writes in Just for Fun as he does on the kernel mailing list - direct and to the point.

In short, Just for Fun tells the inspiring story of how a single passionate software developer can change the world and have fun doing it. It's your classic underdog story. It's good reading for software developers everywhere, especially those with some sense of computer history and an interest in operating systems.

This is a very funny and informative book
By Arizona16
This is a very funny and informative book. Much of the material has to deal with technical issues, such as Linus describing how he implemented multiprocessing on his Sinclair desktop computer, so this is not a book that caters heavily towards those with no experience in computer programming. However, it does give a relatively non-technical summary of Linus's life from childhood to adulthood, it contains a number of jokes that most non-computing people can understand, and it also discusses Linus' philosophy on life and ethical issues in technology, so even those who have never written computer code can identify with significant portions of this book.

Not a Keeper!
By happykat
I was quite disappointed with the novel for a number of reasons but my top complaint was that this storyline was neither romantic or sexy. The characters were poorly developed and I didn't care about them. As for the sex scenes, they were rough and slam-bam-thank-you in nature. I also didn't buy into 'the love story' between the mom's super butch friend and the spoiled Southern Belle. If you want to read about a woman constantly referring to another woman's genitals as the "C" word at every turn and adore reading about a super butch woman roughly screwing dumb helpless femmes, this book is for you.

I met my beloved Kindle DX in October of 2009 - it was love at first sight. Over the next 23 months, she and I built a strong, loving, symbiotic relationship. I plugged her in on a regular basis to keep her little battery charged, and ensured her belly was always full of high quality and oftentimes-lusty lesbian literature. In return, she gave me untold hours of amazing, heart-pounding pleasure, companionship, and uncomplicated understanding though the most difficult of times. I once asked her to marry me, and she simply said, "Turn Wireless On". We have been inseparable, as close as twitchy little dyke and majestic e-book can be.

That is, until I downloaded M.J. Williamz newest release, `Forbidden Passions'. Almost immediately, my Beloved started blinking unnervingly at me, and then her high contrast e-ink face froze forever into some grotesque rorschachian ambivalence. It was over, my beautiful Kindle DX burst into a conflagration that would have made Joan of Arc weep in "is she/isn't she" lesbian envy. She was gone. Um, yeah, thanks for that, M. J.

Okay, maybe I'm being a little dramatic, but downloading Forbidden Passions is the last thing Kindle ever did. At the time, I was in simply in shock.

I mean, I'd read in the Financial Times that M.J. has been working on a super secret formula to quadruple the potency of the classic bodice ripper, with laboratory results guaranteeing exactly 50% of the lesbian population would be brought to their collective knees . . . but I never expected, well, um, [she blushes uncontrollably] scorch marks.

Forbidden Passions tells the story of the socially improper and frenzied antebellum love affair between older businesswoman, Corinne Staples and dbutante, Katie Prentiss. Corinne's best friend, Della Prentiss lost her husband to yellow fever two years ago, and is still in mourning. She knows that the plantation finances are off, but doesn't know why, and asks Corinne, who runs a bookkeeping business in Baton Rouge, to look them over. Corinne hasn't seen young Katie in five long years, and is surprised to find the playful young girl has grown into a feisty, beautiful, 19-year-old temptress.

Unbeknownst to her fragile mother, Katie is a hot-blooded young lesbian that sets her sights on the handsome and engaging Miss Staples. Corinne dresses in men's clothes, works in a man's profession, and has certain, barely accepted `proclivities'. Della knows this, but never considers that anything could happen between her best friend and her daughter. In fact, Corinne even tries to fight the attraction, but Katie's twitchy [bleep] and the swell of her young [bleep] are more than she can deny. Thus begins a feverish and lusty affair that soon turns into an unspeakable love that is tested time and again by greed, family, friendship, and sickness.

Not to mention enough `little deaths' to send the strongest libido into wind sucking tachycardia.

Forbidden Passions is 192 pages of bodice ripping antebellum erotica not so gently wrapped in the [bleep], [bleep] pantalets of lesbian horn dog high jinks ever written. Within the first few pages we're greeted with fluttering [bleep], burning [bleep], and the swell of young [bleep]. But, the erotica connoisseur need not worry, the slow start is intentional, and the pace and heat picks up considerably from there.

She types, with a devious smirk.

While the book is joyfully and unabashedly smut, the love story is well written and the characters are multi-dimensional. The attraction between Katie and Corinne is immediate, but takes a bit of pushing and pulling and over compensation on both parts to come to fruition. Things like `I like you, but its forbidden, and `I want you, but shouldn't' morph into `I need you inside [bleep]', and `I want you, and I'm wearing [bleep]'. So many things could have been tacky and over-the-top, but it's a bodice ripper and said ripping was done with appropriate antebellum flair and requisite period dirty talk.

Imagine my thrill to learn that `[bleepbleepbleepbleepbleep] was fashionably in play as lesbian pillow talk in 1860!

As for the major characters, Katie is nineteen, and makes childish assumptions and mistakes, but she is also a headstrong young woman that knows who she is and what she wants. Corinne is thirty-seven, and lives her life without apology, yet understands that the love of her best friend is the unsteady foundation for the tolerance of her lifestyle. Della is a lady and a mother, but is unable to recover from the death of the love of her life - it is this mourning that keeps her on the wire between the here and now, and nothing.

Forbidden Passions is the very model of modern major erotica, but hidden within the sweet swells and trembling clefts of that erotica is a beautiful May-September romance between two wonderful and memorable characters. Della's consumption, while hinted at early in the story, seemed to advance like Ebola in a warm, moist Petri dish, and I wish we could have seen our lovely heroines deal with that crisis in a bit more detail. Still, I have to admit that I was really and truly enchanted by this erotic tale, and that has to be a first.

M.J. Williamz has a wide reputation for her short stories, and has now given her fans a sound and playful second novel. Erotica isn't for every reader, but if you like a little spice in your story, and you're not afraid or offended to consider how far two women can go together, then Forbidden Passions is a book you should put on your shopping list.

Just don't blame me if your motherboard of choice burns to a crisp, that's all on M.J.

I'm giving Forbidden Passions a lusty, fist pumping 4.8 out of 6 on the Rainbow Scale, because it was devilishly fun and naughty.

Don't waste your time or your money on this trash
By Lucille O'Campbell
Very poorly written book masquerading as lesbian historical fiction when it is nothing but sex trash in that it is not even well done erotica.

This writer knows nothing about how people actually behaved in the pre-Civil War era of the south. She has taken poorly constructed 21st Century characters and tried to transport them to a setting where they do not even begin to fit.

She has her main character, Corrine, a very masculinized woman, running around in men's clothes - which does little more than raise an eyebrow. Corrine and the other main character Katie, for example, go shopping and Katie's acquaintances at the store exhibit a little shock but that is all. In real life - Katie would have been cut dead. They would not have even spoken to her seeing her in the company of a woman dressed in such a way, her reputation and social standing would've been totally destroyed in a single moment.

Katie is hardly an appealing character for that matter - she goes way beyond the usual "high spirited" southern heroine and is quite frankly nothing but a very rude slut.

This is the second book published by Bold Strokes that I have recently tried to read. The other book was also a major disappointment and it has me wondering if Bold Strokes has changed management. Their quality is hitting an all-time low. I'm becoming quite wary of them producing a book that lives up to its advertisement.

Asymptotic Statistics (Cambridge Series in Statistical and Probabilistic Mathematics), by A. W. van der Vaart

This book is an introduction to the field of asymptotic statistics. The treatment is both practical and mathematically rigorous. In addition to most of the standard topics of an asymptotics course, including likelihood inference, M-estimation, the theory of asymptotic efficiency, U-statistics, and rank procedures, the book also presents recent research topics such as semiparametric models, the bootstrap, and empirical processes and their applications. The topics are organized from the central idea of approximation by limit experiments, which gives the book one of its unifying themes. This entails mainly the local approximation of the classical i.i.d. set up with smooth parameters by location experiments involving a single, normally distributed observation. Thus, even the standard subjects of asymptotic statistics are presented in a novel way. Suitable as a graduate or Master's level statistics text, this book will also give researchers an overview of research in asymptotic statistics.

Hidden flaws
By Loren Cobb
On first read-through, I was excited by this book. Enough so that I organized and taught a graduate seminar using it as a text. My experience with the book was less than fully satisfactory, I am sorry to say. The subject matter is important, and van der Vaart's pathway through the material is well conceived, but in the nitty-gritty details there are problems. The all-important Chapters 19-25, on asymptotics in metric spaces, suffers from wild differences in level of exposition, even within individual chapters. Some notations and concepts are left undefined. Most proofs are incomplete sketches, leaving many students confused and bewildered. It takes a lot of mathematical maturity to fully decode what van der Vaart has to say, with the result that his message is often missed or misunderstood. The supplementary notes that I felt required to write ballooned from an initial 10 pages to over 60, and I believe that other, more conscientious professors have written far more. I have no doubt that some of those "supplementary" collections of notes will see their way into print, as textbooks that ultimately do a far better job with this critical material.

Excellent textbook on asymptotics in statistics
By A Customer
This book covers asymptotics at a level suitable for graduate students in statistics and other disciplines such as economics. It does not really treat time-series issues, but apart from that its coverage is very impressive. It covers M-estimators, efficiency, quantile estimators, semiparametrics, and much more. The writing is remarkably lucid; proofs are succinct but very readable. One feature I particularly liked was a very readable introduction to empirical process theory, which would be a good place to start before tackling the van der Vaart and Wellner's more advanced book.

Excellent book, but leaves out many finer technical details.
By stat007
It is a great book with excellent coverage of topics, but it does not fill in many crucial and important details - the kind of technical details which is exactly what you are looking for. If you are reading it thoroughly, after a stage you will wonder why the author has left so much unwritten and unclear. You may scratch your head on one single statement for a week or more and start feeling frustrated. One particular example is the treatment of M-estimators in Chapter 5.

But, nevertheless it is still worth reading every bit, because it provides extremely useful results and tools in almost all the areas, which it covers.

Its a beautiful memoir about Murakamis obsessions with running and writing. Dire Emotions and Lethal Behaviours: Eclipse of the Life Instinct, by Charles Stewart

Dire Emotions and Lethal Behaviours explores the primary motivational system in human beings. Based on the work of C. G. Jung, James Hillman, Louis Stewart and Silvan Tomkins, Charles Stewart investigates the psychology of the innate affects, with a focus towards the emotional motivation of adolescents and young adults who have killed others, themselves, or both.

It is suggested that social isolation, dissociation of the personality, unbearable emotions, and possession by affects are necessary conditions for both homicide and suicide. Stewart argues that these conditions result from deep-seated emotional psychopathology which involves both the positive affects of the life instinct - Interest and Joy, and the crisis affects - Fear, Anguish, Anger, and Shame/Contempt.

Illustrated throughout with case studies of individuals who have committed homicide, suicide, or both, Dire Emotions and Lethal Behaviours aims to discover the emotional motivations for such behaviours so that through education and psychological treatment, such tragic outcomes can be prevented. This book will be of interest to professionals and students in the fields of mental health and criminal justice.

Review

"Charles Stewart's Dire Emotions and Lethal Behaviours offers a penetrating study of the emotional lives of adolescents and young adults who commit murder and suicide (and often both). Stewart writes in a compelling way about the horror and the tragedy of humanity turned against itself... this book not only attempts to confront, from a psychoanalytic perspective, the most desperate and brutal aspects of these adolescents and young adults it also asks us to consider what we can do with such understandings to prevent future acts of brutality. This book will be of great interest to anyone - within or outside of the mental health professions - who feels a need to understand the violence of our time." - Thomas H. Ogden, author of This Art of Psychoanalysis

'Charles Stewart's... ideas about innate affects are very close to the ways in which we experience life – through the emotions... his detailed explanations of how the crisis affects of fear, anguish, anger and shame/contempt weave together to create the behaviours the world has to come both to expect and to dread, is an exemplary demonstration of public psychology in action. This profoundly useful book will appeal to the clinical professions, to educators, and to the general reader.' -Andrew Samuels, University of Essex, UK

'Throughout Charles Stewart’s Dire Emotions and Lethal Behaviours we bear witness to the paramount importance of emotion in human relationships and human development. As we venture with Stewart through the creative and destructive power of the unconscious, and follow his call for emotional perceptiveness, responsiveness, and authenticity, we hear the reverberations of Freud, Klein, Winnicott, and Bion. In re-sounding these rich, compelling, and oft times competing psychoanalytic voices, Charles Stewart brings about an integrated and living theory of affect.' -Jeanne C. 'Charles T. Stewart has written in Dire Emotions and Lethal Behaviours a compelling study about the sources of violence among teenagers and young adults... an excellent, well researched book for clinicians, teachers, and anyone working with adolescents and young adults.' - Robert Tyminski, Jungian analyst in San Francisco and Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the University of California in San Francisco, USA

"This book is well worth reading; mainly because of [Stewart's] ability to bring together notions that were until now unconnected... this book is a big step forward in promoting Jungian archetypes, affect theories and treatment techniques in the treatment of horrific violent acts and their perpetrators."- Prof. Dr. phil. Intelligent Exploration
By Express Lizard
This is a very important book.

Conventional readers will not be able to stomach this book because it makes human the most notorious young icons of our time. "Dire Emotions" takes an in-depth, microscopic look at the inner world of the hurting adolescent without relying on the socially accepted notions of blame and/or "chemical imbalance". Instead, it pieces together the affective conditions that must be present for a young person to seriously consider murder.

The text is well organized with many helpful tables. I find myself re-reading it frequently. The Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold chapter is a must-read for any Columbine researcher. I have yet to find anything like it. The chapter ends with a detailed exploration of the laughter in the library.

Tremendously powerful teaching on matters that impact the heart
By Ian Acheson
Bloom sums up this 31 day devotional (or set of readings) in his introduction: "This is a book to help you with your heart problems. Because your biggest problems in life are heart problems." He then goes to outline how David, "a man after God's heart", prospered when he followed God's heart and struggled when he followed his own.

We often hear the encouragement: "follow your heart" or "what's your heart telling you?" and by using Scripture, Bloom reveals that such encouragement is in fact misleading and may by the worst advice to follow. Why? Because sin infects our heart. That's where it resides and as a result may mislead your heart's leanings. I know in my life I've made decisions based on my heart, and many of those haven't turned out well.

With various titles such as: "The insanity of leaning on your own understanding," "The priceless grace of pressure," "When God feels cruel," and "When God Seems Silent", Bloom using scripture reflects on matters that impact our heart and seeks to provide fresh insight on how to interpret them.

I love Bloom's teaching. It's practical with a good mix of empathy and tough love. Having just finished it I will start it again to allow its goodness to further percolate in my heart and mind.

I grabbed a copy of this off the Desiring God website in PDF form. It was a free version. But I would happily pay for it as this is quality teaching.

The Nest, by Cynthia D'Aprix Sweeney

Instant New York Times Bestseller; named a Best Book of 2016 by People, the Washington Post, the San Francisco Chronicle, Refinery29, NPR and LibraryReads.

“Hilarious and big-hearted, The Nest is a stellar debut.” — People

“Her writing is like really good dark chocolate: sharper and more bittersweet than the cheap stuff, but also too delicious not to finish in one sitting.”— Entertainment Weekly

“Humor and delightful irony abound in this lively first novel.”— New York Times Book Review

A warm, funny and acutely perceptive debut novel about four adult siblings and the fate of the shared inheritance that has shaped their choices and their lives.

Every family has its problems. But even among the most troubled, the Plumb family stands out as spectacularly dysfunctional. Years of simmering tensions finally reach a breaking point on an unseasonably cold afternoon in New York City as Melody, Beatrice, and Jack Plumb gather to confront their charismatic and reckless older brother, Leo, freshly released from rehab. Months earlier, an inebriated Leo got behind the wheel of a car with a nineteen-year-old waitress as his passenger. The ensuing accident has endangered the Plumbs' joint trust fund, “The Nest,” which they are months away from finally receiving. Meant by their deceased father to be a modest mid-life supplement, the Plumb siblings have watched The Nest’s value soar along with the stock market and have been counting on the money to solve a number of self-inflicted problems.

Melody, a wife and mother in an upscale suburb, has an unwieldy mortgage and looming college tuition for her twin teenage daughters. Jack, an antiques dealer, has secretly borrowed against the beach cottage he shares with his husband, Walker, to keep his store open. And Bea, a once-promising short-story writer, just can’t seem to finish her overdue novel. Can Leo rescue his siblings and, by extension, the people they love? Or will everyone need to reimagine the futures they’ve envisioned? Brought together as never before, Leo, Melody, Jack, and Beatrice must grapple with old resentments, present-day truths, and the significant emotional and financial toll of the accident, as well as finally acknowledge the choices they have made in their own lives.

This is a story about the power of family, the possibilities of friendship, the ways we depend upon one another and the ways we let one another down. In this tender, entertaining, and deftly written debut, Cynthia D'Aprix Sweeney brings a remarkable cast of characters to life to illuminate what money does to relationships, what happens to our ambitions over the course of time, and the fraught yet unbreakable ties we share with those we love.

Amazon.com Review
An Amazon Best Book of March 2016: The Nest is a debut novel about a dysfunctional New York family. That’s a pretty common subject for a novel and not very interesting in itself. But there’s magic that happens when you pick up a book, start reading and realize that what the author has chosen to write about—the places, the characters, the dialogue, the set pieces—they’re all just right. That’s how I felt reading this book. The Nest is not populated with characters who are entirely lovable, but I felt each was uniquely human and identifiable, and I especially wanted to know where life would take the four 40-something Plumb family siblings (particularly that rapscallion Leo). Some will take issue with the Plumbs and their upper middle class problems. Some will detest Leo and his family and find harsher descriptions than “rapscallion.” But for my money, The Nest is a great read. This book will be among my favorites of 2016, as I suspect it will be for many readers. --Chris Schluep

From School Library Journal
The four Plumb siblings are waiting for their inheritance (affectionately called the nest) to be dispersed once the youngest sister turns 40. The nest has been growing exponentially since their father's untimely death when they were all adolescents, and each one of the Plumbs has been making poor financial decisions in the hopes of being bailed out by the nest. Instead, the oldest brother is allowed to withdraw the majority of the money early to be used as a payoff for an unfortunate accident he causes. The story develops as the remaining siblings begin to navigate life and the consequences of their decisions without a safety net, but the plot is much more complex than a look at four dysfunctional and often selfish siblings. Teens will initially be pulled into the story by the shocking events in the prologue, but they will connect with the siblings as they recognize aspects of themselves in each of them. The epilogue goes beyond a typical happy ending, illustrating how the siblings have changed and learned more about themselves. YA readers will enjoy immersing themselves in the trendy side of life in New York, as well as coming to understand how adult life may not be all it seems on a well-crafted surface. VERDICT A strong choice for demonstrating how adulthood is as much of a discovering process as adolescence. Purchase where coming-of-age tales are needed.—April Sanders, Spring Hill College, Mobile, AL

This dysfunctional family novel, arriving in March, has best-seller potential written all over it. Scenes in The Nest, which follows four adult siblings and the inheritance shared between them, play out cinematically... certainly every bit as entertaining as a movie, too, and impossibly witty to boot. “[A] closely observed, charming novel.” (O, the Oprah Magazine)

“[S]cenes both witty and tragic... that glow with the confidence of an experienced comic writer... [Sweeney] maintains a refreshing balance of tenderness. Rather than skewering the Plumbs to death, she pokes them, as though probing to find the humanity beneath their cynical crust.” (Washington Post)

“The Nest is an addictive, poignant read with an enticing premise.” (Los Angeles Times)

“Hilarious and big-hearted, The Nest is a stellar debut.” (People, Book of the Week)

“Her writing is like really good dark chocolate: sharper and more bittersweet than the cheap stuff, but also too delicious not to finish in one sitting.” (Entertainment Weekly)

“It’s rare to find a novel as guiltily entertaining as it is profound, but The Nest, Cynthia D’Aprix Sweeney’s engrossing debut, is one such book.” (Elle.com)

“A witty, tender portrait of a very peculiar family, The Nest is a testament to the consequences of our past choices and the ways in which expected inheritance can intimately change relationships.” (Buzzfeed, 19 Incredible New Books You Need To Read This Spring)

“It’s funny and it’s deep. And you’ll hate-love them all.” (The Skimm Reads)

“Frequently funny, sometimes sad and highly relatable for anyone with a sibling or three, The Nest is a breeze to read and hugely entertaining.” (PureWow)

“Sweeney’s family saga balances not only comedy and tragedy, but scandal and achievement, trust and betrayal, belonging and isolation and the complex nature of a family’s love, both at its harshest and most tender.” (Paste Magazine)

“Few things are more compelling than looking into the interiors of other people’s lives-and finding a truth or two about our own. In Cynthia D’Aprix Sweeney’s wickedly funny novel THE NEST, four midlife siblings squabble over their inheritance; universal questions about love, trust, ambition, and rivalry roil.” (More magazine)

“D’Aprix gives each of the characters a distinct and true personality, and she has a flair for realistic and funny dialogue-readers will feel as though they’re sitting right next to the clan as they bicker and barter. "As the rest of the guests wandered the deck of the beach club under an early-evening midsummer sky, taking pinched, appraising sips of their cocktails to gauge if the bartenders were using the top-shelf stuff and balancing tiny crab cakes on paper napkins while saying appropriate things about how they'd really lucked out with the weather because the humidity would be back tomorrow, or murmuring inappropriate things about the bride's snug satin dress, wondering if the spilling cleavage was due to poor tailoring or poor taste (a look as their own daughters might say) or an unexpected weight gain, winking and making tired jokes about exchanging toasters for diapers, Leo Plumb left his cousin's wedding with one of the waitresses."

First let me say that very rarely do I NOT finish a book but this book merited not finishing. While the story is somewhat predictable and cliché (just read the first sentence), it would not have been so bad if the writing had been better. All tell, no show, which I find maddening. And overwritten to the point where I wanted to claw my eyes out every time I turned a page. I can't believe all of the high ratings for this book, and surely, I can expect to receive a lot of down-voting from folks who are voting on my opposing opinion rather than the quality of my review, but this book was so awful, I'll take the heat.

In a nutshell, the book follows the events that occur after Leo "left his cousin's wedding with one of the waitresses" (see above) and in an inebriated state and receiving a service from the waitress, crashes his car, leaving the poor waitress footless. Thanks to this accident, their father's estate, poised for distribution when the youngest Plumb sibling turns 40 is redirected in order to deal with Leo's indiscretions, legal bills and to make the now footless waitress disappear from their lives.

Now that the four Plumb siblings have lost their inheritance or nest egg (aka "The Nest"), all of their shady goings on have nowhere to hide.

Leo, the oldest is a disgusting pig, a user of people, sucking them dry for his own personal needs. Next in line is Jack, a gay antique shop owner (really?) with a country house. I guess I'm just a little tired of seeing gay people portrayed in the same cliché businesses over and over and over so that annoyed me. Newsflash: Gay people work in all professions, not just antiquing. Oh and he has a lot of financial issues too.

Next cliché sibling is Bea, a wanna-be writer who can't get over lost love, because all creative people hold torches for their lost loves (Dante? Beatrice? Really?). Now she's too sad to move on.

Melody, the last of the Plump siblings was the most realistic of the four, trying to raise twin daughters and manage her expensive dream house in Connecticut. At least this portrayal is representative of the many people living outside of their means. But...

I closed the book forever on the first page of chapter 22, when I read the first few sentences:

"When Matilda was recovering in the hospital and found out how much money she was getting from the Plumb family, she had all kinds of fantasies about what to do with it. (Shamefully, she remembered that her first involuntary thought was a pair of suede boots she'd coveted, the ones that went over the knee and stopped midthigh, then she remembered.) She thought about the trips and clothes and cars and flat screen televisions. She thought about buying her sister her own beauty salon, which she'd always wanted. She thought about buying her mother a divorce."

I just didn't buy it.

That was it for me. Hours of my life I can no longer retrieve.

By the way, I selected this because Amy Poehler states (on the cover, no less): "Intoxicating... I couldn't stop reading or caring about the juicy and dysfunctional Plumb family." I think she meant to say. "I wanted to get intoxicated so that I could stop reading about the jerky and dysfunctional Plumb family."

Not worth your time and money.

The characters are some of the biggest jerks on the planet and the ending is awful. I so regret the money I spent on this book.
