JEWEL B. BARLOW, PhD, is Director of the University of Maryland's Glenn L. Martin Wind Tunnel. He is a former chairman of the Subsonic Aerodynamic Testing Association (SATA). WILLIAM H. RAE, Jr. (deceased) was associate director of the F. K. Kirsten Aeronautical Laboratory at the University of Washington and a charter member of the Subsonic Aerodynamic Testing Association. This is the only book that contains everything one needs to know about sub sonic wind tunnel. For students doing a project or a course in experimental fluid mechanics, or those whose work involve aerodynamics, this will be a good reference. Anyone who has been through fluid mechanics courses during their undergraduate years know the importance of wind tunnel testing. This book covers topics from wind tunnel designs, to measurements, boundary corrections, testing procedures and the nonaeronautical applications of wind tunnel.
However, as wind tunnel is initialy design and most widely use in the study of aeronautics, one needs to have some knowledge in aerodynamics in order to fully understand and appreciate this book.

Neal Stephenson enjoys cult status among science fiction fans and techie types thanks to Snow Crash, which so completely redefined conventional notions of the high-tech future that it became a self-fulfilling prophecy. But if his cyberpunk classic was big, Cryptonomicon is huge... gargantuan... massive, not just in size (a hefty 918 pages including appendices) but in scope and appeal. It's the hip, readable heir to Gravity's Rainbow and the Illuminatus trilogy. And it's only the first of a proposed series--for more information, read our interview with Stephenson.

Cryptonomicon zooms all over the world, careening conspiratorially back and forth between two time periods--World War II and the present. Our 1940s heroes are the brilliant mathematician Lawrence Waterhouse, cryptanalyst extraordinaire, and gung ho, morphine-addicted marine Bobby Shaftoe. They're part of Detachment 2702, an Allied group trying to break Axis communication codes while simultaneously preventing the enemy from figuring out that their codes have been broken. Their job boils down to layer upon layer of deception. Dr. Alan Turing is also a member of 2702, and he explains the unit's strange workings to Waterhouse. "When we want to sink a convoy, we send out an observation plane first.... Of course, to observe is not its real duty--we already know exactly where the convoy is. Its real duty is to be observed.... Then, when we come round and sink them, the Germans will not find it suspicious."

All of this secrecy resonates in the present-day story line, in which the grandchildren of the WWII heroes--inimitable programming geek Randy Waterhouse and the lovely and powerful Amy Shaftoe--team up to help create an offshore data haven in Southeast Asia and maybe uncover some gold once destined for Nazi coffers. To top off the paranoiac tone of the book, the mysterious Enoch Root, key member of Detachment 2702 and the Societas Eruditorum, pops up with an unbreakable encryption scheme left over from WWII to befuddle the 1990s protagonists with conspiratorial ties.

Cryptonomicon is vintage Stephenson from start to finish: short on plot, but long on detail so precise it's exhausting. Every page has a math problem, a quotable in-joke, an amazing idea, or a bit of sharp prose. Cryptonomicon is also packed with truly weird characters, funky tech, and crypto--all the crypto you'll ever need, in fact, not to mention all the computer jargon of the moment. Stephenson follows his startlingly original Snow Crash (1992) and The Diamond Age (1995) with proof that he can do as well at twice the page-count, and not only that, but with the promise that this immense volume begins a saga that may rival Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time in its eventual proportions. Volume one, then, is the well-told tale of a World War II code breaker whose descendants end up trying to track down the secrets of the Third Reich's cryptographers--secrets that may liberate or ruin the cybertech world of the present day. Stephenson mixes historical and contemporary settings, handling both with great skill, as he presents a large cast of vividly imagined characters, notably including the original code breaker's granddaughter, and makes both the tale's technology and its conspiracies highly believable. His choice to tell the entire story in the present tense rather calls attention to itself, and, given a book nearly 1,000 pages long, every word is not really essential. Still, this is a book that should be bought for the sake of saying that you have it and read, however long that takes, for the pleasure and intellectual stimulation it is likely to give to most readers. Complex and Excellent

Loved this! Fascinating, well-written novel. Anyone who can make me interested in math that's over my head, which this novel has done, has performed a great service for me. (Wish I had had math teachers who could do this way back when.) Characters are attractive and well-developed. The reader cannot but be interested in what they do and what happens to them. Dual-time history narrative works well and informs. Filled with pungent humor as well. What more can one ask for? Still a bit lost in the Appendix about the history of global wiring and the shorter one on Solitaire, the latter likely to remain beyond my math grasp, sadly, but I suspect I'll go back to them, especially the long wiring one, and learn more than I have soaked up to date. Very glad to have encountered this exceptionally talented author and now have begun is second trilogy.

Really good book, great characters, well-drawn history a little long in parts, but taught me a thing or two....

Don't be discouraged, The this book took me a while to get in the groove.....BUT The parallel past and present and descendants who are in the dark about what roles their fathers played in WWII is plausibility a d skillfully crafted. THIS IS A GOOD BOOK I RATE IT solid overall 4.

I am NOT a mathlete, by any stretch of the imagination, but I found the cryptology fun to follow and for the most part could follow, except when two of the main characters would go off on brain tangents and even for instance, break down the random mathematics of their McDonald's order. There are only a few of these sections in the book, but some of them go on for pages.

As for the OVERALL story, plot, characterizations, I give this book a 4.5. It was worth the 900+ pages. You truly get to know each and every character, except one, the enigmatic Enoch Root, which I desperately wish there had been more explanation about, and his organization.

Having read a lot about WWII, and seen a bunch of documentaries on the topic as well as interviewed surviving vets myself, I find his characterization of the war -- on both fronts to be highly realistic and in tune with what was actually happening as well as the state of mind of the solider/sailors/grunts on all sides. I rate this a 5. Bravo.

A Literary Rubik's Cube

When "Cryptonomicon" came out in 1999, this sloppy masterpiece opened writers' and readers' minds as to the possibilities of time-jumps and maximum parallel plot lines in contemporary (non-science) fiction. I've read the book twice now, most recently earlier this year. The first time I was swept away by the triple-plus plot and three-books-in-one approach. So much so, I loosely patterned my first novel along similar kitchen-sink lines though, crucially (mercifully?), "Sea of Lies" takes place over eight days and not fifty years. Stephenson can really tell a story, and builds tension with those cuts among complementary plot lines from WWII through to the present. He's one of the very best at doing so, and his firsthand research lends additional credibility.

My major criticism is that Neal's editor was on vacation when he submitted this manuscript. It's about 1000 pages instead of being an 800 page gorilla. But what's there is so good that the reader plunges on regardless to find out what happens next to the Waterhouses and Shaftoes (e.g.). I particularly enjoyed reading Stephenson's take on the breaking of the Enigma codes at Bletchley Park and the fate of the Philippines gold.

Stephenson went on to write many other books, but I think his three strongest were "Snowcrash", "Diamond Age" and this giant semi-polished gem.

THE Book to Start With If You Want to Really Learn Technical Analysis

Fortunately for me, this was one of the first books that I bought when I began learning technical analysis. This is probably the best book I own which touches on virtually every aspect of the subject. It is clearly written, and you can certainly read it even if you know nothing. Beleive me, we have all been there. And technical analysis can seem overwhelming when you begin.

My copy of this book is worn, is thoroughly underlined, and I have marked the most important pages. I still refer to it. If you want to get your money's worth, believe me, you should buy this book!

Great Manual to The Markets

If you want to learn how to read the markets BUY THIS BOOK! I have been in the financial markets since '93 and have read dozens of books on technical analysis; I just wish this one was out ten years ago- because I would have saved myself a ton of time.
This book is so simple to understand yet extremely insightful, I call it the "manual to the markets", because its methodologies are explained in detail and applicable to ALL markets. I trade currencies and now use a lot of Barbara's techniques. My favorite chapter is chapter 11 "Transforming Channels into Forecasts".
If you are like me and need to know what the market is trying to tell you then this book is for you. A lot of books out there are heavy on math and light on descriptive illustration this one is the opposite, I cannot stress how easy this book is to digest...If you're a veteran or a newbie to the markets you'll be quite pleased with this one.

Comprehensive Yet Concise

Ms Rockefeller has accomplished a difficult task. Take a broad topic and cover it in a comprehensive and concise manner. The author is a true professional and it shines through out her book from cover to cover. I have a small library of books on technical analysis. However, this is one book I pick up to re-read again and again. She gives a sense of realistic expectations one can rely upon technical analysis for and how to integrate the discipline into one's trading plan. The pros and con's of each aspect of technical analysis is discussed and highlighted. The material flows logically in clear easy to understand manner. This is an indication of an author who truly understands and has practiced the craft and communicates it effectively. I whole heartedly recommend this book.

About the Author

Ruth Duncan, SST, ISRM, SMTO, is an advanced myofascial release therapist, proprietor, instructor, guest lecturer, speaker, national committee member and writer with extensive training in a variety of approaches. She completed her advanced postgraduate training in 2004 with John F. Barnes (the world’s leading authority on myofascial release) and has assisted with his seminars in the United States.

Duncan also has explored other direct and nondirect fascial approaches, including Thomas Myers’ anatomy trains and myofascial meridians, Erik Dalton’s myoskeletal alignment techniques and Jean-Pierre Barral’s visceral manipulation. She has studied with experts on myriad topics to learn more about human anatomy, function and dysfunction and the emotional aspects of chronic pain and healing.

Duncan graduated with honours as a clinical massage therapist from the Humanities Centre School of Massage (now the Cortiva Institute in Florida, USA) and has a diploma in sports therapy from the Society of Sports Therapists (Sports Rehab and Education) and a diploma in sports and remedial massage from the Institute of Sport and Remedial Massage. She runs her own clinicm The Natural Therapy Centre north of Glasgow, Scotland, specialising in the MFR approach in single sessions and intensive treatments.

An excellent introduction to fascia and Myofascial Release. The explanations are easy to understand and the photos of the techniques greatly enhance the descriptions. I recommend it to anyone who is interested in learning about Myofascial Release. But, then it is important to learn the hands on techniques from a teacher who is very experienced in teaching how to do it effectively. This is a good resource book to have in the office.
