I recently completed ready this book as part of a seminary course on Biblical Foundations of Leadership. This is very well written and give excellent insight into the characteristic of what makes great leaders. From my extensive experience in the high tech sector this has applications in the secular as well as the sacred space.

Great reminder for Older Leaders and a "must read" for new Young leaders of today.

I'm within a year of retirement from 35+ years as a Senior Pastor. This book contains a lot of practical applications and lessons I had to learn the hard way. So it’s a “must read” for young new leaders (and not just pastors) of today. Now that I'm looking at a change in direction for future ministry, this book and Reggie McNeal’s book, THE PRESENT FUTURE: Six Tough Questions, gives me the courage to take the next step and make the paradigm changes necessary to be an apostolic leader that our new culture and world demands. Now maybe I’ll be free to do what God has really been calling me to!

Within the last five years Aneze tribesmen and citizens of Mecca, including even guides to the Holy Places, have been his students, in Provo, of all places, while Utah has suddenly been enriched with a magnificent Arabic library, thanks to the inspired efforts of Professor Aziz Atiya of the University of Utah. As if it were not enough for the mountain to come to Mohammed, those sons of the desert who came to Provo found themselves taking a required class in the Book of Mormon from the compiler of this manual. Naturally he was more than curious to see how these young men would react to the Book of Mormon treatment of desert themes, and invited and even required them to report frankly on their impressions. To date, with only one exception, no fault has been found with Nephi on technical grounds. The one exception deserves the attention of all would-be critics of the Book of Mormon.

It was in the first class ever held in "Book of Mormon for Near Eastern Students," and the semester had barely begun when of course we ran smack into the story of how Nephi found Laban dead drunk in a dark alley and cut off his head - a grisly tale that upsets Nephi himself in telling it. As we rehearsed the somber episode, I could detect visible signs of annoyance among the Arab students - whispered remarks, head-shakings, and frowns of dissent. Finally, toward the end of the hour, a smart young man from Jordan could hold out no longer. "Mr. Nibley," he said, plainly speaking for the others, "there is one thing wrong here. It doesn't sound right. Why did this Nephi wait so long to cut off Laban's head?" Since I had been expecting the routine protests of shock and disgust with which Western critics react to the Laban story, I was stunned by this surprise attack - stunned with a new insight into the Book of Mormon as a message from another age and another culture.

A Masterpiece of Impeccable Scholarship

This powerfully insightful book was, and is, so enlightening that Joseph Fielding Smith (10th President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) himself said that it ought to be studied by all members of the Church. Indeed, it should!
It establishes, well beyond any shadow or shade of uncertainty, that the Book of Mormon, if not Divine Scripture, is at least a perfectly representative document of historical Middle East literature; strictly accurate in every respect, and fitting perfectly into the socio-political framework of 600 B.C.
Without embellishing or distorted the facts, Dr. Nibley presents all of the various aspects of life in the Middle East circa 600 B.C., according to the established findings of both Mormon and non-Mormon research. He then demonstrates how flawlessly the Book of Mormon squares with these facts.
And, indeed, the Book of Mormon has even the support of Holy Writ. Namely, the Bible, as he demonstrates in his chapter on Ezekiel's prophecy (Ezekiel 37:15-20). Ezekiel's "Stick of Joseph" is shown primarily to be the Book of Mormon, taken from the "hand of Ephraim"--Joseph Smith being a descendant of Ephraim--and joined together with the "Stick of Judah," the Bible.
Moreover, the Book of Mormon, Dr. Nibley proves, was not only a work of writing above and beyond anything Joseph Smith--who had no more than 3 years of public schooling to his credit--could have produced, it was above and beyond anything anyone could have produced in the early 19th century!
Dr. Nibley also furnishes examples of how the Book of Mormon sheds light on the tactics of humanists, skeptics, anti-religionists, and outspoken unbelievers in general. Reference is made, for instance, to the example of Korihor in Alma chapter 30; Korihor being a prime example of dogmatic humanism.
It is understood, of course, that the pugnacious anti-mormon rabble--as dogs by the wayside--persecute and revile Dr. Nibley, accusing him of partiality in research; of unjustifiable leanings toward the Mormon view of things; and of outright bias.
These claims of rancorous anti-mormon scandalmongers are, as with all of their other claims, pitifully groundless, having no more credibility than the accusations put forth in supermarket checkstand tabloids. One waits with interest but in vain to see even one example of where Nibley's scholarship falls shy of the mark. So, as usual, the anti-mormons produce what they produce best: claims without evidence.
I will add, somewhat, to the aforementioned statement of Joseph Fielding Smith, and say that all people ought to study "An Approach to the Book of Mormon"--not Church members only--if people can do so soft-heartedly, and with a searching mind.

A Scholarly Tour de Force

This work is an eye opener to the wonders of ancient manuscript study. Dr. Nibley has shown through erudite research how one can truly provide authentic evidence for the Book of Mormon by paralleling it with ancient historical data unknown to any 19th century Westerner when the text first appeared. One is amazed at the bountiful truth which is received on the antiquity and authenticity of a text when a scholar pursues meticulous quests into the writings of the ancient world for answers. Truly, Nibley has given the world more logical defense for the Book of Mormon as another testament of Jesus Christ.

Great Insights

As with any book that is written as a commentary or a study assistant, you should read the source of the commentary, The Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ. I find the informatin in Mr. Nibley's book very interesting. It opened up some thought processes that have enriched my study of The Book of Mormon. I would highly Recommend it to all who seek to enrich their own study of The Book of Mormon.

This is a collection of essays written by academics for academics. As a lay person, I would like to see each of these re-written in a more accessible form.

I did come away with two understandings. One is the place and time of SDB, how the prewar, war and post-war environment of France shaped her and how she shaped her ideas from the time. The other is the problem of the English translation of the 2nd sex.

One essay is devoted to the problems of the translation, but these problems are cited in almost every essay. I was not aware of how egregious a problem this is. The examples given show that the translator not only took poetic license with word choice, but in some instances infused his own ideas. Scholars have complained, but translation is expensive and The Second Sex continues to sell as is.

With the French original and the English translation side by side, even with my limited French, I can see how the differences have mitigated SDB's ideas for the English reading audience. The original French shows her to be WAY WAY ahead of her time.

terribly uneven, often inexpert

This book, like many such collections (especially those that bring together papers from a conference), is tremendously uneven in quality. There are a few good essays here--and they are by persons who have written illuminating and substantial pieces in the past. And then there are a lot of weak essays here--pieces which do not get de Beauvoir right or which attempt without success to advance certain themes that are supposed present in her work. The volume's introduction is especially flawed in this respect--as a piece of intellectual history or contextualization it is not bad (though not original either), but as a piece of philosophy it is . . . well, not philosophical. Volumes by Arp, Berghoffen, and Bauer measure up very well to this collection.

A novel approach to liquidity

Nearly all economies require a need for media of exchange (i.e. fiat currency), though few monetary models are precise about the frictions that give rise to this. Nosal and Rocheteau offer a clear and thorough treatment of the "search and matching" approach to payments and liquidity, one which provides explicit microfoundations for monetary exchange.

The book is self-contained and easy to follow, while also being rigorous in its presentation. It begins by introducing the basic environment, nicely condensing pioneering works in monetary theory in the first couple of chapters. Little or no prior course-work in monetary economics is required, but a deeper understanding and appreciation of some results is enhanced with some prior exposure (knowing some basics to game theory is helpful too). I like how the intuition for key equations and results is always provided, though it might be helpful for instructors and students to have problems at the end of each chapter. The suggestions for further reading are extremely helpful for students and researchers interested in pursuing such topics in their own work.

Crucially, the book is not just about the role of currency in exchange: it also studies how assets are valued for their liquidity properties. The later chapters in fact relate assets prices to monetary factors and seek to explain famous asset pricing puzzles (e.g. the equity premium puzzle), illustrating how search theory can generate new insights that more standard theory cannot. At the same time, different notions of liquidity from the finance literature (e.g. bid-ask spreads, trading volume) is also shown to be captured quite well by the general framework (this treatment is in the last chapter which studies "over the counter" markets with pairwise matches between investors and dealers).

Overall, I would definitely recommend this book to any researcher or graduate student interested in the economics of money and payments. Those interested in monetary history, game theory, market microstructure, and international trade would benefit as well.

Money, Payments, and Liquidity by Nosal and Rocheteau provides a very coherent, tractable framework that utilizes search frictions to understand the role of money and payments. The book lays out a basic microfounded environment in which money endogenously takes on a role as a medium of exchange. Nosal and Rocheteau extend the basic model to study monetary policy, the inflation-output tradeoff, liquidity, credit and asset prices.

No prior knowledge of the search and matching literature is needed to follow the book as Nosal and Rocheteau do a great job of providing intuition for the environment and key equations. At the end of each chapter is a comprehensive literature review for those interested in further research.

I highly recommend this book for those interested in monetary economics, macroeconomics and finance. This book presents the models in a simplistic, yet rigorous way making it perfect for both graduate classes and upper level undergraduate classes.

Great book!

The organization of the materials is excellent. The book gives readers enough but not overwhelming background knowledge in order to discuss more interesting and important topics. It is fun to read and also touches some pretty in-depth materials. I believe this is going to be a good reference book for first year PhD macro and a textbook for 2nd or 3rd year monetary macroeconomics. In fact, I am planning to use it in my course. Personally, I also enjoyed the book a lot while relaxing on the beach.

Excellent Book that is a MUST-READ for all

This book is an exceptionally well-well written, argued and referenced exposition on a silent travesty that is occurring everyday. The hypothesis of the book is argued with exceptional lucidity and supported with numerous real world examples. Unfortunately, the prosecution of doctors and the criminalization of medicine after the passage of the Harrison Act and the Controlled Substances Act is not discussed, nor is the financial incentive behind the current "asset seizure" laws explored.
However, that criticism is not meant to in any way detract or diminish the profoundly important work formulated into this very clear, readable book. But beware, ignorance is not bliss and what you will learn in this book will leave you literally terrified. I have been a victim of 2 rogue, overzealous, unethical federal prosecutors. Fortunately, the federal judge and the magistrate judge both saw their habitual disregard for Court orders, respect for the law or proper legal procedure. Even with a sanction by the federal judge and winning a Hyde Ammendment for "bad faith, vexatious or frivolous" prosecution, my life has been ruined in every possible sphere imaginable.
Other innocent Americans are at risk and public awareness needs to be raised. I hope this book is the spark that shines light on this secret abuse of and brings about a return to the traditional Anglo-American system of law.
Again a must-read for everyone. A collection of true modern-day horror stories and discussions as to how we came to this point, and what must be done.

The book begins with a series of simultaneously fascinating and horrifying stories about well-intentioned, knowledgeable people winding up in jail for ridiculous reasons. Following the stories is some even-handed, clear and incisive analysis looking into the causes of over-criminalization, the problems with a lack of a guilty mind requirement, and some of the effects on society. Overall, the book is well-written and insightful and will change the way you look at criminal law. Definitely worth reading, regardless of your political party.

Unbelievably Good Read. So True it is Scary.

It is hard to start with this review. I am in the book, so it is very real to me. My story is in Chapter 10. I have re-read my story three times now. On different days. Each time I started to cry when I finished it. What happened to me is so unbelievably true. I am so glad that members of Congress such as Louie Gohmert(R) of Texas, Ted Poe(R) of Texas, "Bobby Scott"(D) of Virginia and John Conners, Jr.(D) of Michigan held Congressional hearings on July 22, 2009 on this very subject. I was invited to testify to Congress, and they recorded my story. It is so important to stop the runaway unjust prosecution of innocent people for alleged crimes that carry no "mens rea", or in English, no "evil intent". I would have never believed that an inventor would be SWAT Teamed and then handcuffed and put into Federal Prison for an obscure regulation that no one outside of the EPA would have ever heard of. And to then be convicted without any intent. Wow. It is so un-American. So opposite to a freedom loving people. As I told Congress, it is very Scary. And so very Real.

There are two very well respected contributors to this very important book. One is Edwin Meese III, the Former United States Attorney General. He has a very deep, well thought out and concisely clear introduction to the present "over criminalization" problem we have in America today. The other is Former United States Attorney General Dick Thornburgh. He also really lays the problem out and how we got there. And how we should fix the problem. This book is very well thought out and written. I hope Congress moves and puts essential "mens rea" back into the requirements for conviction. Without the "mens rea" intent requirements, you could be next! The government could charge you with whatever regulation they want, and you do not need to even have known about the regulation. Or had any wrongful intent to be convicted. Believe me, I went from a freedom loving life, free to choose and do what I believed every God Loving American should do, to a life behind bars, with stainless steel toilet and drinking fountain combinations. Living the life of a "criminal". When you are not a criminal, it motivates you to want to correct the injustice. I believe in God, and he will prevail. This book is an excellent and informative read. Please help save the God Fearing America I grew up in. Please read this very good book and pray that America returns to its roots of Justice for All. And please give it to others to read. Please pass it on. Thank you.

Michael W. Hudson is a staff writer at the Center for Public Integrity, a non-profit journalism organization. He previously worked as a reporter for the Wall Street Journal and as an investigator for the Center for Responsible Lending. The winner of a George Polk Award, Hudson has also written for Forbes, The Big Money, the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times and Mother Jones. He edited the award-winning book Merchants of Misery and appeared in the documentary film Maxed Out. He lives in Brooklyn, New York.

Demonstrates that the major subprime lenders engaged in massive fraud

The author has done an excellent job in demonstrating that the major subprime lenders,the great majority being concentrated in or near Orange County ,California,such as R Arnall's Ameriquest and A Mazilo's Countrywide,were engaged in a pattern ,repeated over and over again thousands of times,of deliberate misrepresentation,forgery and fraud.The goal was to misinform potential buyers seeking fixed rate loans so that they could be manipulated and maneuvered into signing variable rate adjustable loans with initial ,low ,teaser rates that would then increase dramatically after 2-5 years.The basic sales pitch was the old " bait and switch " gambit.

The author demonstrates that the major subprime lenders especially targeted older,elderly,single, black women with low incomes who owned their homes outright and /or had low fixed rate mortgages on their homes ,but who were either in poor health and/or seeking loans to upgrade /fix up their homes.The author provides numerous case studies demonstrating precisely how these black women were tricked and manipulated into agreeing to adjustable rate loans that dramatically increased their monthly payments over time.The same initial customer would then be victimized over and over again by affiliated subprime lenders who would claim that they could reduce the monthly mortgage payment .

The author shows how these firms were directly connected to the major Wall Street investment banks,especially Lehman Brothers.He then traces the securitization practices of the commercial banking industry and shows how the loans were spread and sold worldwide.

This book shows that the subprime real estate mortgage loan industry collapse was very similar to the collapse of the Savings and Loan industry in the 1988-1991 time period that resulted from highly speculative,Ponzi loan practices that started in the early 1980's .

I recommend this book for purchase.It is the first book to concentrate specifically on analyzing the subprime crisis as a criminal enterprise.

Strong account of predatory lending

This was a strong book. Strong in the sense of well documented and researched, and strong in vivid detail and tone. The author says he has been covering predatory lending since the early 90's and I can believe it. He has many anecdotes, many stories of individuals being defrauded, and many interviews of persons who worked for predatory lenders. This is the first writing of any kind I can find to enable me to understand predatory lending, as opposed to just dumb subprime lending. This understanding arose when the author cited statistics that show 99.75% of these lenders' loans were not to purchase a house but to people who already owned a house. The book conveys in very strong detail the ways in which First Alliance and Ameriquest "preyed" on elderly, minority, sometimes incompetent homeowners and tricked them into putting their homes at risk for loans that were unnecessary, more expensive than called for and in many cases based on fraudulent documentation. There is no doubt that these are stories of outright criminal behavior and many more people should have been prosecuted for what they did (the owner of First Alliance and Ameriquest has died). Mr Hudson depicts thoroughly the business model of predatory lending, their hiring and training and sales practices, their advertising budgets and their lobbying prowess (he absolutely impales Deval Patrick, ACORN and many other organizations as being bought off by the predatory lenders). He provides real insight when he demonstrates that the owners of these businesses appear to take it for granted that they will only be in business for a few years. I was stunned that it appears to have been incredibly easy for someone who has previously run one of these companies and bankrupted it to set up another such business and go right back to defrauding homeowners. There should be some licensing or process that companies have to go through to get into that position. (I was reminded of another book I read recently called Dark Harbor about the mob dominating the NYC waterfront in the 1940s and 1950s, where the mob was able to obtain one union charter after another without any investigation of any kind).

The subtitle of the book refers to a gang on Wall Street but, although there was some content in the book that related to Wall Street, I would estimate it was no more than 20% and it was much less substantial and vivid than the dominant story about the predatory lenders. There was a page or two on rating agencies, about 20 pages on the relation between Lehman and First Alliance including a short summary of a trial that I found quite anticlimatic and a page that seems to have been taken right out of a recent book about Lehman called A Colossal Failure of Common Sense. I suspect there was some effort to position the book in buyers' minds as an anti-Wall Street book and while the author does have that perspective there just isn't that much content on that subject, compared to the detailed accounts of the predatory lenders fleecing their customers. Also, the majority of the book is set in the 90's (indeed, it begins in the 80's). Only the last 100 pages of the text are set in the 2000's. So I do not think such marketing is particularly accurate, which is ironic given the book's point of view.

A small point: when I bought this, Amazon's links were confusing the author, Michael W Hudson, with a Michael Hudson who is a different author.

Explodes politically self serving myths of economics and rational choice

The previous reviewers have done a good job of explaining basically what The Monster is all about. However, I would like to highlight why the book presents a unique challenge to academic economic theory, particularly as it applies to public policy.

The foundation stone of Neo-Classical economics is that market participants are inherently rational, are capable of "discovering" the best available deals, and will quickly put destructive market participants out of business. This is the Revealed Truth of Milton Freidman, the bonkers Objectivist philosophy of the beyond bonkers Ayn Rand, the rigid simple mindedness of the economics texts by Gregrory Mankiw and the Harvard kids who have been force fed this abstracted, idealized, establishmentarian slop....

Micheal Hudson never explicitly sets out to torpedo theoretic economics, he simply sets forth the way a set of perverse incentives, aided and abetted by an utterly dysfunctional regulatory apparatus, could make an absolute, unrecoverable hash of the Ivy League worldview... one in which all markets naturally seek the most efficient (and in Friedmanite orthodoxy) most moral allocation of assets and talent.

Hudson instead shows a nested structure of economic actors that behave more like criminalized, methamphetamine soaked, reckless, soulless swine. It is abundantly clear that "incentive structures" can, quite easily, produce outcomes that have a high degree of local rationality, i.e. individuals maximizing their gains, while at the same time have a higher degree of systemic irrationality.... i.e. stuffing grossly fraudulent paper into the securitization system in wholesale quantities with zero regard for the ultimate consequences. Such as imploding the credit markets...

Frankly, Hudson's book should be a mandatory text in every introductory economics class taught in this country, because it dispositively proves that the Neo-Classical/Washington Consensus model is a broken model.
