Fresh and different for fantasy
By Acbarber
Since I read all four of the currently published books in a week and a half, I will post this same review in all four.

I purchased these books since I was familiar with the author's work as a module writer in the Neverwinter Nights computer game by Atari (also excellent work). I figured it would be a fun series to revisit in a novel format and gave it a try. As stated above, I finished reading four books in a short time. That said, here is what I think of the writing:

The concept is based upon two young men who find themselves pulled into an adventure they were not expecting. What I found really intriguing is that unlike the majority of fantasy books, the protagonists are not some super warriors that fight their way through impossible odds and worry if they break a sweat. Instead, the characters are realistic; they're young, inexperienced and are not really prepared for what awaits them. In conflicts, they don't act like the Black Knight in Monty Python's Holy Grail shouting, "Tis only a flesh wound!" and fight on like nothing is wrong. In contrast, when they are hurt the effects could be minor or it can be serious enough to pull them out of the battle completely. Also, if a significant threat is facing them, the characters have the common sense to be afraid and at times try to avoid the conflict if possible. Instead of fighting with brute force, they rely on whits, developed skill and a little luck. Overall, I really enjoy the characters in how they interact, deal with their personal demons and interpersonal conflicts amongst the group.

The plot itself is based on the module that he wrote for NWN but how he pulls the story together in the novel is smooth and believable. Often the heroes find themselves not looking for adventure, but are manipulated into situations outside of their control or they are just pawns of events transpiring around them. I feel this series is worthy of the high marks I gave it and I look forward to the future installments!

Exciting book 3
By John H. Carroll
Lots of adventure in this one. The adventures split into two and the author does an excellent job of making you want to know what's happening in one thread while he switches to another. As a result, you have to read quickly to get back to it! Then you want to get back to the other thread.

One of the author's strengths is in making the characters seem real. Aiden is a jack of all trades sort of character who the reader wants to succeed. Pacian is a definite anti-hero, but the reader wants him to do the dirty work and enjoys it when he does. The supporting characters all have distinct and enjoyable personalities.

Quests lead them in separate directions in an attempt to find an artifact to save the kingdom. The locations they travel to are easy to imagine without being over-described. Enemies and other characters they meet along the way are just as colorful and diverse as the primary characters.

Surprising events lead to an unexpected conclusion to this story and more questions to be answered in the next. The characters must find new resolve against despair and danger. It sets up the next one excellently.

As with the other books, the dialogue has humor scattered throughout, the battle scenes are vivid and intense. If you enjoy rousing, epic adventures, this is an excellent series for you.

Epic!
By M. Brown
Truly an "edge of your seat" story. Nowland is an amazing storyteller, each book getting better and better. I mean, who doesn't love two epic dragon battles?

Nowland had a very clever way of making sure you knew when the two parties of adventurers were doing things at the same time, never once using the words "meanwhile" or "at that same tme".

If you hate epic battles, action, and characters you can truly know, then this is not the series for you. Otherwise, enjoy!

Projects are constantly beset by problems, often caused by seemingly small mistakes which collectively lead to larger issues. Why do project managers and teams appear to repeat the same mistakes? Can they make better choices without introducing complex decision analysis processes? How can they make better estimates? Project management is the art and science of human interactions. ProjectThink identifies and explains the paths of those intentional and unintentional actions that lead to trouble. It provides advice and guidance in analysing information and risk and explains how ’choice-engineering’ can facilitate decision-making and encourage everyone involved in a project to follow the right procedures and work collaboratively.

Review
'Failing to reach objectives is a major concern in project management. According to the authors failed projects are often the consequences or irrational choices made due to mental errors. To ensure the success of uncertain or smaller projects, the effort in management should shift from policing to choice engineering. This excellent book gives the tools needed to achieve this goal. Written in a natural language, using simple facts, personal attitudes, relevant cases, fun projects and well known films it allows an enjoyable and entertaining read while highly thoughtful.' --Marta Fernndez-Diego, Universitat Politcnica de Valncia, Spain

Amazon.com Review
"I think it hurts a writer," said fiction writer Bernard Malamud, "to have his secrets known--his method of working disclosed while he is still active." Malamud was, according to his colleagues Alan Cheuse and Nicholas Delbanco (the editors of Talking Horse), "resolutely private about the construction of his finished work." Maybe so. But over a lifetime, he wrote an impressive amount of material about his own work, and about fiction in general. Talking Horse collects much of that material--speeches, book introductions, interviews, lesson plans, essays, and more. Included here are notes on The Natural, a defense of fantasy, musings on the great task of embarking on a novel, and a discussion about Jewishness in American fiction. Though most fiction writers see the short story as a warm-up for writing longer fiction, Malamud loved the form. "Within a dozen or few more pages," he said, "whole lives are implied and even understood." He displays here, by turns, endearing humility ("it took years for my work to impress me"), a piercing intellect, disdain for "gossips" who want to know the person behind the fiction, and a strong belief not only that the work must speak for itself, but that there is likely "more to a book or short story than the writer himself knows." A very satisfying collection from a man who liked to claim that "as a writer I learned from Charlie Chaplin." --Jane Steinberg

From Publishers Weekly
Novelists Cheuse (The Light Possessed) and Delbanco (In the Name of Mercy) have assembled an impressive gathering of the late Malamud's essays, interviews, lectures and notes, a good number of which have never before been published. The collection reveals the author of The Natural and many other books as a dedicated craftsman and teacher, firmly connected to a larger Jewish literary tradition and animated by a deep-seated humanism and a sly wit. In addition to admirers of Malamud's fiction, this book should also be of considerable interest to aspiring writers, as Malamud is open and revealing about his own creative process, and consistently engaging in his often politicized and outspoken views on the artist's role in society. The book's biggest weakness lies in the fact that it is clearly a gathering of disparate occasional pieces, with considerable repetition. Malamud often uses the same examples to make the same point, sometimes almost quoting himself word for word. And while his comments on his own work and on the creative process are enduring, some of his comments on the cultural moment already feel dated. While readers may find themselves wishing the author himself had been given the opportunity to form these pieces into a larger whole, the collection is nevertheless filled with Malamud's distinctive and compassionate wisdom.

From Library Journal
This collection of interviews, speeches, lectures, notes, and essays, many of them never before published, will inspire and challenge all readers, especially those interested in the craft of writing. Winner of a Pulitzer Prize and two National Book Awards, novelist Malamud (1914-86) is best known for The Natural (1952), The Assistant (1957), and The Fixer (1966), as well as for a number of short stories. During his lifetime he revealed little of his writing process, making this collection particularly valuable. Editors Cheuse, a commentator for National Public Radio, and Delbanco, a novelist whose works include In the Name of Mercy (LJ 8/95), were colleagues and friends of Malamud at Bennington College. Their introduction and notes at the beginning of each section add biographical facts and personal anecdotes. Of particular note is Malamud's revelation of his source material and ruminations when beginning a work, permitting us to glimpse a novel or short story's birth. In the discussion of "The Writer and His Craft," he offers valuable, detailed advice for the beginning writer, stressing that hard work must accompany natural talent. Recommended especially for students of writing.

A master on the art of his writing
By Shalom Freedman
Nicholas Delbanco and Alan Cheuse two younger colleagues of Bernard Malamud collected speeches, occasional writings, whatever they could find in which Malamud spoke about his writing, and to a lesser degree, his life. Malamud was a dedicated craftsman, a modest and devoted artist, whose love for the short story is strongly emphasized in this collection. Cynthia Ozick writes of it, "In these pages the Malamudian intellect is so clear, the humanistic sweetness so dear, the literary credo so pure, that it is almost as if the writer's living presence-in all its urgent truthfulness - were magically restores to us."

I think a review of this kind is best served by giving a taste of the words of its subject. So here are remarks from Malamud in 1959 in a speech 'The Writer in the Modern world' which he gave upon receiving the National Book Award.

" At the same time the writer must imagine a better world for men the while he shows us, in all its ugliness and beauty, the possibilities of this. In recreating thehumanity of man, in reality his greatness, he will, among other things, hold up themirror to the mystery of him, in which poetry and possibility live, though he has endlessly betrayed them. In a sense, the writer in his art, without directly stating it ( though hemay preach, his work must not)must remind man that he has, in his human striving invented nothing less than freedom: and if he will devoutly remember this, he will understand the best way to preserve it and his own highest value."

The dent on the book is minimal, only affected the hard cover and it's hardly noticeable. What I did notice was the huge savings for a brand new book.

Big book in a small package
By E. Uthman
As a practiciing pathologist, I have spent thousands of dollars on disappointing cytology books for two and a half decades, so my expectations in this area are low. However, I just got the second edition of this book, and I am absolutely delighted.
This is a small format book that fits well on the desk and in the hand, but it is crammed with great photomics and text that is short on academic BS and rich in diagnostic pearls. Frankly, I think this book blows DeMay and the other two-ton tomes out of the water.

great review book!
By bk
I got this in lieu of the baby deMay for study for path boards. I think it's pretty good as a solid review for cytology as it covers pertinent general features of major organ systems. Pictures are super clean and very clear (some with even arrows!!)

CONS: ok, here we go. Not every entity described has a coresponding picture. I hate that. If you go to the trouble writing about a certain tumor for half a page...put in a photo or something of it. This happens about 5% of the time in this book. The text is really concise and valuable. SO, don't expect an indepth discussion regarding various staining patterns or molecular etiologies. Kinda pricey...if it were $99 it be perfect. OR if it came with a picture CD/atlas with MORE pictures that be great.

PROS: the format is great. For a disease entity, you get brief text(like 100words), a clear box with a few morphology bullet points, and then a clean picture with description(and arrows!)...NEXT disease...It's a quick review no nonsense format and I like it alot. Has a mini Lab Management section in the back in the skinnys about regulations, billing, and personnel...pretty good actually.

Conclusion: I think this is great for review. Certainly the baby deMay and Atkinsons text are the gold standards for board review, especially since she used to be the board chair and supposedly used her cyto picts in the test. If you already have these books, then I guess dont bother unless you got book fund money to blow. Overall, I recommend this.

Readable guide to cytopathology
By A Customer
As a first-year pathology resident, I just started learning the complexities of cytopathology. I asked a number of pathologists to give me recommendations for a starter textbook. Cibas and Ducatman's book was mentioned more than once. Once I got a chance to use the book, I realized that it lived up to the hype! It is a readable introductory textbook that dispenses with obscure jargon and presents cytopathology in an understandable and organized manner. I highly recommend this text to any pathology resident, cytotechnologist, or other professional looking for a coherent introduction to cytopathology.

Online files needed are unavailable!
By leadpan
UPDATE:
The publisher support got me the files needed. Book as been great.
I found their online video more helpful then the book itself. Only wished all the book lessons are view-able as videos.

Book is composed of lessons and practice files used in Fusion 360. However, these files are not downloadable!
First pages of the book says to download files needed for lesson at ftp.ascented.com, but doesn't work. Site is down.
The company web page or youtube channel has no info on any video lessons mentioned on the book. Emailed the company support for response.
So far not impressed with the $45 paper weight on my desk!

It has good content and is the only choice out there
By R. Bedford
I wish I could give this a higher review. It has good content and is the only choice out there. However the videos and work files are not there. The ftp site is empty so no sample files to do stuff in the book on. And I emailed for the video access as described in the book and a week later nothing still. While the content in the book is useful the video is a significant part and with no sample files the text is not as useful. Buyer beware as it seems like you are not getting all that was promised

Fusion360 for "dummies"
By Robert Leslie Brown
The book is an excellent resource for "older" students who find value in a hard-copy reference text that can be used in
conjunction with on-screen tutorials, webinars, and course-work.
The accompanying on-line lessons are difficult to access.

Economic Thought: A Brief History, by Heinz D. Kurz

In this concise yet comprehensive history, Heinz D. Kurz traces the long arc of economic thought from its emergence in ancient Greece to its systematic presentation among the classical thinkers of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries to the influential work of scholars such as Paul Samuelson and Kenneth J. Arrow. With a keen eye for how economic insights are acquired, lost, and reborn, Kurz focuses on the dynamic individuals who give old ideas new life and the historical events that provoke different approaches and theories.

Over the course of this journey, Kurz explains what Adam Smith meant by the "invisible hand"; how Karl Marx's "law of motion" works in capitalist economies; the roots of the Austrian economists' emphasis on the problems of information, incomplete knowledge, and uncertainty; John Maynard Keynes's principle of effective demand and economic stabilization; and the insights and challenges offered by growth theory, welfare economics, game theory, and more. He concludes with a deft summation of world economists' major concerns today and their critical relation to world events.

Review

An enjoyable and well-organized history that will attract many readers to this highly readable treatise on the 'dismal science.'

(Amartya Sen, Harvard University)

Economic Thought ranges from harvest details on ancient Babylonian clay tablets to select recent developments in economic theory. Despite this breadth, Heinz D. Kurz achieves a truly impressive attention to detail and is able to provide intellectually satisfying explanations of many economic theories, both classical and modern. Any noneconomist wishing to acquire an intellectually serious introduction to economic theory would be well advised to begin with this book (and some overspecialized economists could certainly benefit too!).

(Ian Steedman, Manchester Metropolitan University)

An excellent read both for economists trained in the current traditions who want to know more about how their field evolved and for general readers looking for a broad but relatively compact history of economic thought.

(Richard R. Nelson, Columbia University)

The curious reader could not ask for a better guide to the significance of the history of economics than Kurz, who has distilled his many years of scholarship into this fine, easily readable book. Kurz understands well the dual nature of historical studies: to establish what the relevant theories meant in their time and their often changed application to our time.

(Geoffrey Harcourt, University of New South Wales)

If you're looking for a short but masterful overview of the course of economic thought, Heinz Kurz's book, translated from the German by Jeremiah Riemer, might be just the ticket.

(Brenda Jubin ValueWalk)

More annotated bibliography, less history. Brief, though.
By Athan
Heilbroner this wasn't.

So if you already know the material and you want somebody's view of how it fits together, that's cool.

If you want a complete list of who fits where in the history of Economics, even better, though the Index does not list all the economists you will encounter in the text.

If you want to know what year all major economists were born, look no further, you have come to the source.

As a book to help you refresh stuff you once knew, however (and I confess that's why I picked it up) it is not that great. I was disappointed.

Finally, it will date quickly, because the author keeps referring to the crisis we're living through.

I'll keep it, all that said, because it is a good and heavily annotated bibliography.

Interesting
By Autamme_dot_com
Trying to distil economic ideas and theory from the start of time to the present day into a relatively small, understandable and interesting book, which is suitable both for the general reader and economics expert is no easy task: yet the author seems to have achieved this with aplomb.

Clearly this is not going to be a definitive work or the only economics textbook you may need, yet it is a pleasurable romp through history that shows how economics and underlying theories have developed over time. It was not an onerous read and it certainly can give a nudge to even the most jaded of readers! The author even considers some of the current-day concerns of economists and examines how this can relate to world events as a means of rounding off the book.

There was no need to resort to hyperbole or dumbing-down to make the book more attractive. A combination of incisive, thoughtful writing and selective, sensitive editing made the literary journey quite pleasurable and rather more-ish. As this is a translated work, credit must also be given to the translator as in such situations their efforts can really make a difference.

To be fair, some of the material could easily fly over the head of a generalist, yet it did not seem to derail the story being told and the mind perhaps automatically filtered this material away without losing a beat or distracting the reader. This book is capable of serving many different audiences and it serves them well. A highly recommended book for those who crave knowledge.

Well researched but rendered uninteresting
By Steve G
Economics can be a very interesting area to explore but this is not adequately conveyed by this book. While acknowledging that author Heinz D. Kurz wrote a very thorough book, thoroughness and brevity do not necessarily go together. I found it difficult to maintain interest in part due to the textbook-like writing of the book. In addition, the book might have been better if it focused on fewer elements but explained them better. Unusually for me, I stopped reading partway through.

Disclosure: I received this book for free via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
