Not a good fit for study, just to refresh your knowledge and pass though the book
By Anna
It summarizes the message-Consultans sell billable hours, concentrates on soft skills and teaches you nothing about them, case study continues though the chapters and conveys the image that the consultancy company was incompetent from the very beginning to the end. Also, a textbook that takes to be read for a week maximum makes me suspicious of its quality.

Despite all consultants I know are amazed by it, feels like practicing soft skills with proper supervision would help much better than book about it as soft skills practice is hard to describe on paper and even harder to grasp from reading.

Buy it only if it is required for the class!

A Clear Picture of Consulting Tools
By .JT.
I've just finished my first pass through this book, and am about to go through and compile all of my many margin notes.
Note that there are no technical topics involved in this book and the author lets you know that at the start.
The author has done a terrific job of presenting a clear picture of the framework he espouses. The reasoning behind the facets of the framework and case studies lend well to giving a more dimensional view of the topics and tools involved in each of the "soft skills" that are utilized in consulting. I especially appreciated the case study emphasis on facilitation.
Even if you are an experienced consultant, this book will remind you to use all of your tools and keep the final goal in mind when working on any project. Most importantly it will help you to fully determine what the goals are (even if the client can't always articulate them.)
I will be using this book as a touchstone to insure that I am incorporating each the varied skills needed to be a successful and beneficial consultant, because sometimes one's blade gets dull.

An important treatise on an important topic
By Brett Gibson
It seems that this current generation of IT professionals sliding into Consulting from back-office developer positions are woefully devoid of the skills listed here. The SME too, who believes that consulting skills are subservient to their agenda fail in many of the areas outlined in this book. This book should be required reading for employees of organizations whose role it is to play in the consulting space.

Mississippi Trial, 1955, by Chris Crowe

Winner of the 2003 International Reading Association Award for Young Adult Novel. This gripping read is based on the true events of the murder of Emmett Till, one of the nation's most notorious crimes that helped spark the Civil Rights Movement.

At first Hiram is excited to visit his hometown in Mississippi. But soon after he arrives, he crosses paths with Emmett Till, a black teenager from Chicago who is also visiting for the summer. Hiram sees firsthand how the local whites mistreat blacks who refuse to "know their place." When Emmett's tortured dead body is found floating in a river, Hiram is determined to find out who could do such a thing. But what will it cost him to know?

From Publishers Weekly
Basing his promising debut novel on historical events, Crowe adopts the point of view of a white teenager confronting racism in the 1950s South. Hiram Hillburn has resented his civil-rights-minded father ever since the age of nine, when his parents moved him from his adored grandfather's home in Greenwood, Miss., to the more liberal climate of an Arizona college town. Now that he is 16, Hiram has finally been permitted to visit Grampa Hillburn again. Crowe takes a bit too much time before arriving at the central action: the lynching of Emmett Till, a black teenager from Chicago who reputedly made "ugly remarks" to a white woman, and the nationally publicized trial, in which the murderers were acquitted. However, the author takes a nuanced approach to ethical dilemmas and his plotting seems lifelike. Events force Hiram to question his willingness to stand up for his beliefs and to reevaluate his understanding of the animosity between his grandfather and father. The characterizations are sketched with care, from the white lawyers who mock the black witnesses they cross-examine, to R.C., the bully whom Hiram suspects of participating in the crime, to R.C.'s sister, whom Hiram likes. If the conclusion feels a little hasty, Crowe's otherwise measured treatment will get readers thinking. Ages 12-up.

From School Library Journal
Grade 6-8-While visiting relatives in Mississippi, Emmett Till, 14, spoke "ugly" to a white woman and was subsequently tortured and murdered. Two men were arrested and tried for this heinous crime, but in spite of substantial evidence, were found not guilty. Crowe has woven the plot of his novel around these historical events. Hiram, the fictional main character, had lived with his grandparents in Mississippi as a child. Now 16, he returns to visit his aging grandfather, where he meets Emmett Till. He also renews a childhood acquaintance with R.C. Rydell, a redneck bully. When Emmett's mutilated body is found, Hiram immediately suspects that R.C. was involved. In a predictable twist at the end, he learns that it was his grandfather, not R.C., who helped the murderers. The Deep South setting is well realized. Descriptions of the climate, food, and landscape are vivid and on target. Likewise, Southern racial attitudes from the period are accurately portrayed. Grampa is a racist but Hiram enables readers to see his good qualities as well. Hiram himself seems rather naive. He is unable to fathom the racial prejudice at the root of his father's alienation from his grandfather. Nor does he feel the aura of racial fear and hatred that hangs over the entire region. The novel succeeds in telling Emmett Till's story, but there is an emotional distance that keeps readers from caring as deeply as they should about this crime. Still, it is a story that needs to be told. This book belongs in all collections to show young readers the full range of American history.
Bruce Anne Shook, Mendenhall Middle School, Greensboro, NC
Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist
Gr. 7-12. The 1955 murder of 14-year-old Emmett Till in Mississippi and the trial of his racist killers are at the center of this strong first novel. Crowe tells the story through the eyes of a white teenager, Hiram, 16, who is spending the summer with his beloved grandpa. The boy meets young Emmett, a lively African American visitor from Chicago, who refuses to go along with the submissive ways expected of a good black boy in the segregated community. When Emmett is tortured and killed, Hiram believes he knows one of the perpetrators, and he attends the trial. The facts are horrifying, and Crowe stays true to the newspaper accounts. What moves this beyond docudrama is Hiram's relationship with Grandpa, which has always been strong, unlike that with his father. At times Hiram's relationship with Dad (mainly offstage) seems added on to the story, and there's just too much about the cute, small-town "characters." But Crowe shows violent racism in daily life as well as in the drama of the trial, and he adds an edgy whodunit mystery element that will hold readers to the end. Teens will recognize how easy it is for Hiram to be a bystander to bigotry and will feel the horror of his sudden awakening to the evil that is part of "normal" life. Hazel Rochman

Good Introduction to a Painful Part of US History
By Sheila Ryan Hara
I bought this book in recognition of the author, Chris Crowe, who has studied the topic of Emmett Till's gruesome murder and farcical trial at length. Well-written in the voice of white teenager Hiram Hillburn, it is full of details to enable visualization of rural Mississippi in the 1950's. I always think it's playing with fire when we try to factionalize history, but Crowe pulls it off in a credible fashion, especially the generational gap between father, son and grandfather. I wish there had been more detail as about Emmett and his family in the story, as their characters were thin on the ground. Mamie Till Mobley deserved to be mentioned by name and her campaign to get the world to recognize this atrocity for what it was should have been worked into the story. After all, Hiram could have read papers and listened to the radio, which were full of this tragic news in 1955. All in all, it's a reasonable introduction to the topic for a high school English or Social Studies course, but nothing beats actual sources!

Yoko Ono: GrapefruitYoko Ono

Yoko Ono is a seminal figure in the development of Conceptual art, performance and Fluxus, as well as film and new music. Her artist's book Grapefruit, first published in 1964 in Tokyo by Wunternaum Press in an edition of 500 copies, contains more than 150 works divided into five sections: MUSIC, PAINTING, EVENT, POETRY, OBJECT. These works--conceptual instructions--are the culmination of a process that dispensed with the physical and arrived at the idea.
Since the initial publication of Grapefruit, numerous expanded editions have been produced in many different languages. Today first-edition copies are nearly impossible to find. The Museum of Modern Art has now produced a facsimile of that first edition, making it available again in its original form. This slipcased paperback is produced from the copy of the 1964 book in The Museum of Modern Art Library. It is an exacting replica of Grapefruit as Ono first envisioned it.
Born in Tokyo in 1933, Yoko Ono moved to New York in the mid-1950s and became a critical link between the American and Japanese avant-gardes. Ono's groundbreaking work greatly influenced the international development of Conceptual art, performance art and experimental film and music. In celebration of Ono's 80th birthday in 2013, the Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt organized a major traveling retrospective.

Great book by a misunderstood artist
By matthewslaughter
Since 1968, Yokophobia has prevented people from perceiving reality correctly. Yokophobia was brought on largely because John Lennon was "supposed" to marry a white woman, oh, and, another thing, because the Beatles broke up. Since she has been blamed for this, shattering the delusion that a rock band should last forever (look at the Rolling Stones now for goodness sake!), people have been unusually mean-spirited in their assessment of her work. I can understand why people shy away from her more avant-garde musical output, often consisting of ear-shattering screams (I am one of those sickos that just happens to love it!). But "Grapefruit," one of the most widely distributed pieces of Fluxus-connected/inspired "performance art," is simply irresistible. (Remember, Yoko had a career as an avant-garde artist before she met John Lennon--they met at one of her art exhibits in 1967.) It is serious, excruciatingly humorous and regularly induces smiles--all while simultaneously encouraging its readers to think abstractly, artistically, creatively and irreverently. "Grapefruit" is a breath of fresh sky-blue air from the woman who once asked (on the b-side of John Lennon's "Instant Karma") "Who Has Seen the Wind?"
"Grapefruit" is filled, for the most part, with short, koan-like "pieces" such as "Wall Piece for Orchestra." Yoko directs the piece as follows: "Hit a wall with your head." In "Overtone Piece," Yoko writes, "Make music only with overtones." In the painting pieces section, she instructs her reader, in "Painting for the Wind," to "Make a hole. / Leave it in the wind." In the "events" section, probably the closest here to her performance art, she evokes a giggly pun on "peace" (or maybe "pee") in "Pea Piece," writing, "Carry a bag of peas. / Leave a pea wherever you go." If you find this type of humor and "artistic direction" a waste of time, which many undoubtedly will, then avoid this like the plague. But if you, like me, find this darkly humorous, refreshingly perverse and instructive as to how to live life seriously without taking it too seriously, then "Grapefruit" should find a place on your bookshelf, or, better yet, on your nightstand.

Master Piece
By Junglies
I bought this book in England in 1970 when it was released with the charming cover of a grapefruit atop a female posterior.
I loved the book and kept it rather than follow Yoko's instructions to burn it afterward.
Yesterday I read it again. It is funny how one's perceptions change over thirty years for better or for worse.
My conclusion is that this book is a Master Piece.
Sorry Yoko!
Please experience this book. SERIOUSLY!

Yoko Ono is one of the art worlds few and true originals. She is unique in everything she does, wether it be performance art or music. This book proves to be no exception. In Grapefruit Yoko lets you see into an avant-garde world that is bursting with imagination that can only be seen through her eyes. Lundy Eastepp

Partial Differential Equations: Methods, Applications and Theories, by Harumi Hattori

This volume is an introductory level textbook for partial differential equations (PDE's) and suitable for a one-semester undergraduate level or two-semester graduate level course in PDE's or applied mathematics. Chapters One to Five are organized according to the equations and the basic PDE's are introduced in an easy to understand manner. They include the first-order equations and the three fundamental second-order equations, i.e. the heat, wave and Laplace equations. Through these equations we learn the types of problems, how we pose the problems, and the methods of solutions such as the separation of variables and the method of characteristics. The modeling aspects are explained as well. The methods introduced in earlier chapters are developed further in Chapters Six to Twelve. They include the Fourier series, the Fourier and the Laplace transforms, and the Green's functions. The equations in higher dimensions are also discussed in detail.

This volume is application-oriented and rich in examples. Going through these examples, the reader is able to easily grasp the basics of PDE's.
